Melbourne, December 29
Australia crushed India by 122 runs in the opening Test on Thursday, destroying their vaunted batting lineup with aggressive pace to claim a decisive victory inside four days in Melbourne.

India, chasing a historically challenging 292 runs for victory, were never in the hunt after they crashed to 81 for six with the loss of Sachin Tendulkar's wicket late in the middle session.

The tourists, who have yet to win a series in Australia in 64 years, were routed for 169 off 47.5 overs after Australia squeezed another 61 runs from their remaining two wickets earlier in the day.

Man-of-the-match James Pattinson led the way with four for 53 while Peter Siddle claimed the prized scalp of Tendulkar for 32 to again keep the Indian star's 100th international century on hold.

Indian bowlers did well to restrict the hosts to 240 in the second innings but the visitors put up a pathetic show while chasing 292 and were all bowled out for a paltry 169 to concede a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

Asked if he is worried about his batsmen, Dhoni said, "Not really. They are very experienced batsmen. You have to give credit to Australia bowlers for the way they bowled. They kept a nagging line outside the off-stump and that's why they got us."

Dhoni also lauded Australia's lower-order batsmen for making significant contributions to their total in both the innings.

"Bowlers brought us back in to the game. We were short by 50-odd runs in the first innings. Their lower-order scored some runs, if we had got them earlier, we would have had 50-60 runs less to chase," he said.

Dhoni also seemed optimistic about making a comeback in the series when the second Test starts in Sydney from January 3. "We are known to be tentative starters, I think in the next game we will be slightly better."

Victorious Australia captain Michael Clarke acknowledged the contribution made by his pace trio, experienced duo of Mike Hussey and Ricky Ponting and the lower-order batsmen.

"Our tail were outstanding with their batting, and we have to give full credit to the bowlers. You always want to have plans against whatever team you play and we were able to execute the plans.

"Credit has to go to Ponting and Hussey as well. India are a fantastic team. It is great to have them here in Australia. We know they'll come hard at us in Sydney," Clarke said. — PTI

The Australian pace trio of James Pattinson, Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus shared 19 wickets to restrict India to a two-innings total of 451 as the home side romped to a 122-run victory in four days.

The pace attack reduced India's regal top order to 81 for six as the tourists failed to come close to the challenging target of 292 runs needed for victory at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Clarke, whose team rebounded spectacularly from their shattering seven-run defeat to lowly New Zealand in Hobart earlier this month, praised his bowlers for their stout-hearted efforts.

"It was a really hard-fought Test match and we have to be at our best to beat India," said Clarke, who improved his record as Test skipper to four wins from nine Tests.

"They've got a lot of class players, their batting order is as strong as any batting order in the world, so for our bowlers to have success I think they deserve a lot of credit.

"It helps when you've got three fast bowlers bowling with great control, good pace. That makes a big difference."

Pattinson, 21, picked up his second man-of-the-match award in only his third Test match after taking match figures of six for 108 and hitting a vital unbeaten 37 in the second innings to frustrate India's efforts to restrict Australia's lead.

Australia's three pacemen also contributed significantly with the bat, with Siddle hitting 41 in the first innings and Hilfenhaus chipping in with knocks of 19 and 14 along with Pattinson's two unbeaten knocks.

"The advantage we have at the moment is 'Sidds' and 'Patto' are making runs so they're making up for a few of us like me. I didn't make any runs," Clarke said. — AFP

Pattinson's Test star on the rise

Melbourne, December 29
Australia's new fast bowling star James Pattinson continued his meteoric rise with a man-of-the-match all-round performance in the first Test thrashing of India in Melbourne on Thursday.

Pattinson, just 21, has made a huge impression in his three Tests this season and picked up his second man-of-the-match award with six wickets for 108 and two unbeaten knocks of 18 and 37.

In three Tests, the youngster from Victoria state quick has captured 16 wickets and impressed with his resolute batting at number nine.

Pattinson said it was a dream come true to play cricket for his country. "I wasn't even born when ( Sachin Tendulkar) started playing cricket, so to go out there and bowl against him and have some success against their batsmen is unbelievable. And to get a win is even better."

Pattinson, who put the experienced Indian batsmen on the back foot with his aggressive bowling, said his natural game was to attack. "It's just the way I play cricket, it's the way I've been brought up," he said.

"I like to attack it, I like to go out there and do my own stuff. It's not a conscious effort (to intimidate), it's just the way I play."

Pattinson said he also placed a heavy emphasis on his batting to consolidate his place in the Australian team amid a fast bowling injury crisis.

"Nowadays, the way cricket's going, you need to be able to bat towards the end," he said.

"You've seen so many valuable partnerships from the last two in many games of cricket, so it's something that I put a big emphasis on in the nets and practising trying to get as many runs as I can for the team, because it does help."

Pattinson and Ben Hilfenhaus frustrated India's efforts to wrap up the Australian second innings with a last-wicket stand of 43, which only made India's winning chances even more difficult.

"It does put the game back in our sort of favour and their opening batsmen didn't really want to be stuck out there too much longer, which they did," Pattinson said. — AFP

Sri Lanka in sight of victory

Set to make 450 to win, South Africa were 136 for six at tea, a distant 314 runs short of the target. South Africa's problems started when fast bowler Dilhara Fernando dismissed South African captain Graeme Smith for 26, surprised by a ball which lifted sharply for him to be caught at first slip off the shoulder of his bat.

Hashim Amla and Jacques Rudolph stabilised the innings with a second wicket stand of 51 but the match swung dramatically in Sri Lanka's favour in the first over after lunch when Rudolph fell to a spectactular diving catch at second slip by Mahela Jayawardene off Thisara Perera.

Jacques Kallis completed his first 'pair' in 149 Tests when he was caught at short leg off left-arm spinner Rangana Herath when he attempted a sweep, the ball skidding off a top edge onto his helmet and then up in the air to present Tharanga Paranavitana with an easy catch.

Sri Lanka's chances of winning a Test in South Africa for the first time - and achieving their first Test win of the year - soared when Amla, after making a fluent 51, drove Herath to Chanaka Welegedera at mid-on and set off for a suicidal run. Batting partner Ashwell Prince did not respond and Amla was given out when both batsmen found themselves at the wrong end when the wicket was broken.

The out-of-form Prince fell to another lifting delivery from Fernando, caught at first slip, and a miserable afternoon for the hosts was completed when Herath trapped Mark Boucher leg before wicket, leaving AB de Villiers, on 17, as the last recognised batsman.

Messi dazzles India, Bhutia retires

New Delhi, December 29
Argentine wunderkind Lionel Messi's visit was undoubtedly the watershed moment for Indian football in a year during which its torchbearer Bhaichung Bhutia walked into the sunset after an illustrious career spanning a decade and a half.

Messi's three-day stay in Kolkata created a never-seen-before buzz not only in the city of joy but the entire nation as it watched with bated breadth the 23-year-old weave his magic in front of a stadium packed to the rafters. September 1 was a date those present at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata and the millions glued to the TV sets would not like to forget in a hurry.

Even as the Messi-led Argentine XI, including Barcelona team-mate Javier Mascherano, displayed their sorcery in the exhibition match against Venezuela, the aficionados of Indian football saw the event as a platform designed to give the sport's profile a boost in the sub-continent.

The high-profile international match - a first in India - generated widespread excitement and raked in the moolah from broadcasting, sponsorship and ticket sales. The match, part of a push to turn the country into one of the world's major soccer powers, was telecast live in 150 countries.

Cut to the Indian footballers, it was Bhutia's retirement that was the talk of the town. Known as the 'Sikkimese Sniper' for his shooting skills, the poster boy of Indian football for a major part of the last two decades called it quits on August 24, bringing to an end an era that saw the national team qualify for the Asian Cup after a gap of 24 years besides winning two Nehru Cup titles. — PTI
