Amritsar, December 30
A day after rebel Youth Akali Dal (YAD) district president Gurpartap Singh Tikka announced to contest the Assembly elections as an independent, other SAD ticket aspirants from Amritsar (East) constituency today appealed to SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal to reconsider the issue before officially granting the East constituency to the BJP.

The East constituency is dominated by Sikh voters.

Upkar Singh Sandhu, president of District SAD (urban) and also one of the main contenders for the ticket from East constituency, said he would definitely approach the SAD president to accept our sentiments by fielding a SAD candidate from this seat.

This constituency has a total of 13 wards which included 11 full-fledged ones and two partial ones. Out of 11 wards, six were won by SAD councillors and two went in the favour of BJP candidates during corporation elections. The rest of the three wards were won by the CPI and Congress candidates.

The constituency has 1.35 lakh voters out of which 85,000 are Sikh voters (Jat Sikhs - 20222, Ramgharia - 20221, Mazhbi Sikhs - 20207 and other sects like Khatri Sikhs - 21000).

SAD leaders argued that the Hindu voters list in this constituency stood at just 31,000 and it would be just next to impossible for a BJP candidate to win.

"Looking at these statistics, it was quite obvious to project a candidate from the SAD party. And that's why we had already started interacting with the masses here and initiated to redress their grievances in advance," told Sandhu.

Meanwhile, Tikka, also the vice-chairman of Agro Industries, announced yesterday that if he was not given ticket to contest from East constituency, he would contest the elections against SAD candidate Inderbir Singh Bolaria from Amritsar (West) constituency.
