Sexual Abuse Case
School warden fired; remanded
Second medical examination conducted on ‘victim’; police finds report lacking in clarity
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, November 14
The Cambridge Public Senior Secondary School authorities have fired hostel warden Shakti Singh, who has been accused of sexually exploiting a Class VII student at the hostel on Sunday night. Shakti Singh has been sent to 15-day judicial remand and the child to his relatives’ home at Jakhan.

Meanwhile, the parents of some children also came to meet Principal S Vohra to register their protest about the incident. Some former students of the school also came to express their anger. Anil Kumar, a parent, alleged: “It is shameful that after charging a whopping amount as admission fee every year, they have not been able to ensure the safety of children studying here.”

Pushpa Chamoli, mother of a student, blamed the school authorities for remaining ignorant about the “wrongdoings” taking place on the school campus. “The Principal of the school must be removed first of all for he had no knowledge of what was happening at the institution,” she said.

Meanwhile, the Principal was seen telling the parents that he had taken strong action against the warden by firing him.

Investigating officer BD Bahuguna said they had got the child’s second medical examination done from a surgeon in the city but the report was lacking in clarity. The initial report said the child had been sodomised.

He said the police was waiting for two children, who had stayed in the same room as the alleged victim, to come back after the vacations to ascertain whether they, too, had been “sexually exploited” by the warden.

Dehradun, November 14
The evolution of the Garhwali costumes and jewellery worn by the women of different regions of Garhwal was elegantly displayed at the Regional Costume competition held today at the ongoing Kothig.

A total of 33 women (in the age group 26 and above) participated in the show and were judged mostly for their presentation and knowledge about the costume.

The women displayed the dresses and jewellery worn in Pauri Garhwal, Landsdowne, Chaubatiyakhal, Tehri Garhwal and the Srinagar areas of Uttarakhand.

The first prize was won by Manju Kotnala, who impressed the audience not only with her dress sense but her ability to articulate issues concerning women. She apprised the judges about the efforts made by the Mahila Mangal Dals in uprooting social evils in the state.

The second prize was won by Saroj Narela, third by Sarveshwari Gosain and the consolation prize by Pitambari Devi.

State Project Director of the Mahila Samakhya Geeta Gairola, Director of Regional Language Center Savita Mohan and Dr Kusum Nautiyal were the judges.

Shedding light on the evolution of the Garhwali woollen drape that is worn by the hill women, Dr Nautiyal said: “Earlier, the hill women draped around the woollen shawl together with the ‘kamarbandh’ and the traditional jewellery. Soon the woollen shawl took the shape of the sari, which was drapped like the shawl but worn with full sleeved blouses in the lower hills, the influence of the plains clearly visible,” said Dr Kusum Nautiyal, who has done a research in this field.

How the Tehri ‘nath’ (nose ring) that was influenced by the Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan culture has overtaken the Pauri ‘nath’ was quite visible with almost all women even from Pauri wearing it.

“The Pauri ‘nath’ is quite heavy and there are very few craftsmen available who can make this piece of jewellery and because the Tehri ‘nath’ can be made in a small size, it has clearly become popular,” said Geeta Gairola.

Despite the best efforts of the Akhil Garhwal Sabha, the participants from the Yamuna and Ganga valleys failed to turn up at the show.
