Radar network to be set up to study climate
Nainital, November 9 This was stated by a senior official of the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, Dr P Sanjeeva Rao, while addressing participants at the School of Radar Probing of the Atmosphere programme being organised on the Manora Peak facility of the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) near Nainital yesterday. Dr Rao said 11 stratosphere troposphere radars (ST radars) were required across the country to study a range of climate and atmosphere-related phenomena like cyclones, orography, monsoon etc. He said three sites had been identified for putting up such radars in Cochin, Kolkata and Vishakhapatnam. Talking to TNS, he said, “The radars are being put up by different ministries and departments.” He said the mesosphere stratosphere troposphere radars (MST radars) had been around for the past 20 years, but emphasis was now being laid on the ST radars. Efforts were being made to widen the scope of research with the help of these radars from the south to other parts of the country to look into the local problems. Referring to the ST radar being installed at the Manora Peak, he said: “It is very crucial with regard to the weather in the central Himalayan region.” The proposed radar is expected to become fully functional within one year and its installation is expected to be over in the next six months. He said the radar would help in understanding socio-economic issues and the monsoon. The unique thing about the ST radar being installed at the Manora Peak is that it is for the first time that a ST radar with 200 MHz frequency is being installed in the globe and this is a major challenge undertaken by the scientist fraternity. Normally these radars are of either 400 MHz or 50 MHz. |
