Stray dogs cause two accidents in Delhi
New Delhi, November 12 The first incident occurred about 1 am at Zakir Hussain Marg. "A Maruti Eco Van, with three people inside it, rammed into a road divider when a stray dog suddenly came in front of it. No one was injured in the car crash," said a police official. The second accident near the INA Metro station was similar to the first one. The official said a Verna car rammed into a road divider and overturned when a stray dog came in front of it. "The driver saved the dog. The accident happened about 1.30 am. Four friends - Rohit, Shankur, Tarun and Sameer - were travelling in the car. They were heading to their homes from Khan Market," said the official. Only Tarun sustained a minor injury on his leg. He was taken to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he was discharged later. Spokesperson for the NDMC Amit Prasad said the organisation was equally concerned about the stray dogs. "We don't remove stray dogs from the place where they stay. The NDMC immunises them and puts them back from where they were brought. Their safety is equally important, even they are a part of society," he said. Besides accidents involving stray dogs, there was an incident wherein a BMW car overturned after ramming into a road divider near the Talkatora stadium about 3.14 am. "Because of overspeeding, the vehicle rammed into a divider at the road junction near the Talkatora stadium and overturned. The driver survived because of the airbags of the car," said a source. "The car was coming from 11 Murti and was heading towards Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. At the left turn for the hospital it rammed into a divider and overturned two-three times," said the official. Driver of BMW Umesh fled the spot after leaving his vehicle there. He arrived at the Mandir Marg police station 12 hours later to claim his car. The police said he was probably with a girl friend. Umesh has been fined for dangerous driving. He is a resident of Sainik farms. |
Govt to frame policy on new autos
New Delhi, November 12 This was decided at a meeting yesterday evening following the directives of the Supreme Court that had lifted the ban on issuing new permits. The auto drivers are often asked to keep their metres functional, but many of them just charge in lump sum. Commuters now hope that the Supreme Court's nod for issuing 1,00,000 fresh autorickshaw permits would mean greater competition and an end to their woes. At present, around 55,000 autorickshaws ply on Delhi roads. Natasha Nautiyal, who commutes daily between her south Delhi house and Noida office, said: "I am not sure if it will make much difference as even now the availability of autorickshaws is not a problem. The real issue is they don't go by metre and fleece the passengers. I hope more competition brings about some positive change." Nikhil Damodaran, who lives at n Patpargaj in east Delhi, pays Rs 200 for travel up to Nizammudin railway station--almost double the official fare. He hoped once the new autorickshaws hit the road, he would not be fleeced. |
