Jalandhar, October 16
It was a day of cheer for the 50,000 teachers of the master cadre union as the CM Parkash Singh Badal granted their prime demand nine days before Diwali yesterday.

Rallying in favour of their demands for a long time, overjoyed members of the Master Cadre Union, Punjab, declared that the CM had accepted their prime demand of better status and pay scales, at a meeting that went late into the evening at the CM’s residence in Chandigarh on Saturday.

Addressing the media at a press meet here today, union president Gurpreet Singh Riar said, “Acknowledging our prime demand regarding scale and status, the CM issued instructions to release a notification regarding the implementation of pay band 10,300 - 34,800 + 5,000 (grade pay) at the meeting yesterday.”

Thanking Punjab Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan for his efforts, Riar also said, “Assurances were also provided for the 3,746 promotions for the post of lecturers by 31 October and of 350 promotions for headmasters by the first week of November.”

While the cadre had been demanding better pay scales irked by the anomalies in pay scales - vocational teachers and computer teachers (with matric + diploma qualifications) were getting better grades than masters (with qualification of graduation + B.Ed.), the move has brought cheer to this cadre of teachers in the state who had been rallying for these very demands of theirs since December 2010, for pay anomalies which had begun back in 1996.

Their grade pay of Rs 5,000 will be implemented from January 1, 2012.

3rd robbery in police quarters in 2 months

Gurdaspur, October 16
The police officers are on the back foot as burglars entered the heavily fortified police residential colony, located within the Sadar police station complex, and looted cash and valuables worth thousands of rupees from a head constable’s flat.

What is disturbing the top brass is that this is the third robbery in the colony within the last two months.

Last night, a group of robbers managed to make their way in to the third-floor flat of Rachpal Singh through a ventilator. At that time, the cop and his family were away to their native land.

When the family returned to their flat in the early morning, today, they found that the robbers have robbed Rs 40,000 and some gold ornaments from them.

Rachpal called the
police control room, which despite assertions from senior officers that it works around the clock, failed to respond. Rachpal then informed the police following which a team of officials, led by the Additional SHO, Harjit Singh Saini, reached the spot.

Rachpal said Harjit Saini was in an inebriated condition when he reached his residence-a claim which was vehemently denied by the Additional SHO. Rachpal then called the DIG (Border range), Ram Singh, who in turn sent in some officers to sort out the matter.

However, matter between Rachpal Singh and Saini flared up to such an extent that the former parked a car in front of the officer’s car following which Saini could not move out of the residential area. “ Saini, who was drunk, got infuriated and aimed his pistol at me and some of my colleagues, including Tasveer Singh.” Tasveer Singh is also a police officer whose flat
is adjacent to Rachpal’s home and which was burgled two weeks ago. Things calmed down after some neighbours intervened following which Harjit Saini drove straight to the SSP’s office to apprise the latter of the situation.
