War-torn nation to get assistance in capacity building programmes

In what is bound to irk Pakistan, India and Afghanistan today entered into a strategic partnership under which India will, among other things, assist the war-ravaged nation in training, equipping and capacity building programmes for Afghan National Security Forces.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh sign the landmark pact in New Delhi. Karzai began his two-day visit to India, his second this year, on Tuesday.

10 of family jump to death in Dehradun canal
Dehradun, October 4
Ten members of a family, including six children, reportedly committed suicide by jumping into the Shakti Canal at Vikasnagar near Dehradun today. The police said the family was in depression after the death of one of its members some months ago.

As part of a strategy to give a boost to the anti-Maoist operations, the Andhra Pradesh government would press into service an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) for a close monitoring of the Naxal activities in deep forests.

Widening the scope of human rights, the Supreme Court has ruled that people’s right to own property fell very much within the domain of human rights. Pointing out that human rights were “gaining a multi-faceted dimension,” a Bench comprising Justices Dalveer Bhandari and Deepak Verma observed that these rights had already covered the “individual rights such as right to health, right to livelihood, right to shelter and employment etc.”
