Sandeep Rana/TNS

Dehradun, October 4
Ten members of a family, including six children, reportedly committed suicide by jumping into the Shakti Canal at Vikasnagar near Dehradun today. The police said the family was in depression after the death of one of its members some months ago.

The lone survivor of the tragedy was an elderly woman, Kailasho. She was found unconscious on the banks of the Shakti Canal with her hands and feet tied up. She was also to jump into the canal but changed her mind seeing her grandchildren drown and tried to stop her family from taking the extreme step.

The bodies of three women and six children have been fished out of the canal.

Kailasho’s daughter Rita told the police that her sister Rekha had died of a stomach ailment some months ago and the sisters could not bear the shock. A suicide note written by one of the sisters to her husband has been found.
