Jalandhar, September 26
Four persons were injured when two groups clashed over the construction of a road divider in the Model House locality of the city here this noon. The trouble started when Deputy Mayor and councillor of Ward 50 Parvesh Tangri reached the spot and began overseeing the work being done which was resumed today a week after it was stopped by Mayor Rakesh Rathore following protests by the shopkeepers of the area.

The divider had been recommended by the civic body after it was felt that it was needed to regulate traffic on the Ravidass chowk-Vaishno Devi mandir-Basti Sheikh road.

Today also the shopkeepers raised slogans against the Deputy Mayor and the Municipal Corporation and disrupted the work. Tempers ran high as Tangri and his supporters tried to reason with the protesters and said it was a common cause and would result in better traffic movement.

Soon some of the protesters, led by Major Singh, a Congress leader who had unsuccessfully fought the previous civic body polls from Ward 48, reached there and a war of words ensued. Soon they began jostling each other and in no time it was a free for all with iron rods and bricks being used in the fight. Four persons, including Ish, a son of the Deputy Mayor, sustained injuries.

Although iron rods and bricks were used in the fight, no one was seriously injured. After that both the groups dispersed on their own, the whole area was littered with stones and broken bricks.

Tangri alleged that certain vested interests were behind the incident and had provoked the shopkeepers. In fact, some of the people who had encroached upon the road were behind the protests, but work would be resumed in the coming days.

Incidentally, Major Singh has a mall on the same road, while some of the shopkeepers are using a large portion of the road as a storage area adding to the traffic chaos. The problem is aggravated by people parking their vehicles on the roadsides further reducing the traffic area on the road. Many fatal accidents have taken place on this busy stretch.

Suvidha Centre staff go on indefinite strike
Visitors face much harassment as they had to return empty-handed

Jalandhar, September 26
Hundreds of people from across the district faced much harassment owing to an indefinite strike called by employees of Suvidha Centre from today. The visitors kept on turning up throughout the day to avail themselves of various services, but had to return as the glass gates of the centre remained closed. A notice from the employees reading “The centre is closed due to indefinite strike” was pasted on the gates.

A cross-section of people coming to avail themselves of various services had to return empty-handed. “It was a futile exercise on our part to have come to the office today,” they were heard fuming as they left the premises.

There are 52 employees working on the contract basis in Suvidha Centre. The employees have been demanding that their services be regularised with a handsome increment in their salaries.

Today, the administration had made no alternate arrangement. Officials are contemplating that in case the employees do not get back to service by tomorrow, they would direct the visitors to the respective branches from where they have to get the work done as was the system earlier. The officials even have plans to enrol fresh staff in case the strike goes on for a longer period.

Asked about the strike, ADC (D) Sarojini Gautam Sharda, said, “On Saturday, we served a notice to the employees that in case they proceed with a strike from Monday, it will be illegal and against the interest of hundreds of visitors coming to the office for various works.”

On the way out, she said, “We are still planning on how to go about it. If the strike goes on, we will make some arrangements to ensure that public does not suffer.”

Jalandhar, September 26
In a status-ridden and cash-flushed NRI Doaba belt, the much sought after VVIP number 0001 could not find any takers at the auction of the fancy numbers at the District Transport Office (DTO) here today. The reason was a lack of adequate number of bidders.

The auction for the fancy numbers started at 10 am and went on till late in the evening during which new series of ‘BW’ and ‘BV’ were released by the DTO office. The number 0001 was not auctioned in either of the two series.

The fancy number 0001 could not be auctioned, as only one bidder was present and at least two bidders were required. The DTO office did not declare the next date of auction of this number.

Earlier in the morning a heavy rush of the bidders for the fancy numbers was witnessed at the District Administrative Complex. Especially the youth had turned up in large number to get their VVIP number.

Eco-rickshaws set to hit city roads

Jalandhar, September 26
Environment-friendly rickshaws with a cushioned seat, a shed atop and fastening belts are set to hit the city roads soon. Ample space underneath the seats to keep goods is another unique feature of the rickshaws.

Even more interesting is that the seat is broad enough to accommodate children at the back. There also is an iron rod at the back, which the kids can hold on as they enjoy the ride. A demonstration of the rickshaws was held during a camp organised in front of the Municipal Corporation office today. Assistant Commissioner D.P. Bhardwaj hopped onto the rickshaw as he tried to assess the comfort factor.

Giving the details, Bhardwaj said the rickshaws were introduced after an issue was raised that hollow iron rods should be used instead of wood in rickshaws to make them environment-friendly. The new rickshaws were lighter since they weighed just 60 kg in comparison to 90 kg weight of the traditional rickshaws.

“It has been decided that fresh registration would be done only for eco-rickshaws so that the traditional ones can be gradually replaced from roads,” he said, adding that 100 registered rickshaw-pullers had been identified who were willing to take the scheme. The price of the eco-rickshaw, designed by the Hi-Bird company, has been kept at Rs 9,641 and is comparable to that of the traditional one. P.L. Sharma, Manager of UCO Bank, said the rickshaws would be financed at all nationalised banks at 4 per rate of interest.

“The rickshaw-pullers who buy it would have to pay just Rs 10 a day as instalment, whereas they have been paying a daily rent of Rs 30 to Rs 40 for using rickshaws owned by certain groups,” he added.

Ashok Kumar, Manager (Sales) with the Hi-Bird, said, “Depending on the feedback that we get from public and rickshaw-pullers, the company may further modify the rickshaw a bit.”

Beopar Sena to Kaypee: Duronto should halt in city

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, September 26
Agitated at the lukewarm response to their protests regarding the halt of the Duronto Express in the city, the members of Beopar Sena, Punjab, handed over a memorandum to Jalandhar MP, Mohinder Singh Kaypee at his residence this morning.

The members demanded that the recently started Duronto should halt at Jalandhar, Phagwara and Ludhiana. It was highlighted that the residents, industrialists and businessmen from these three cities were most affected and hence Kaypee should take up the matter with the Railway Ministry.

Talking to The Tribune, president of the Beopar Sena Ravinder Dheer said that the Duronto train is hardly running at 20 per cent of its capacity while the common man is suffering due to high fares of the buses and taxis. “It has been more than 30 years since the residents of this part of the state have been demanding a direct train. Sadly, even if it has been started it is a mere eyewash”, he added.

The industrialists also maintained that Jalandhar and Ludhiana were the major manufacturing hubs of the states and hence the number of passengers travelling to the state capital was high. “Mohali International airport is also coming up and without a good rail link to the state capital, scores of NRIs from the city would again be dependent on the taxi service.

We want that the MP Kaypee should pursue this matter with the Railway ministry at the earliest”, Dheer said. Kaypee gave a patient hearing to the industrialists and said that he was already pursuing the matter of starting an inter-city express with halts at Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Phagwara.

He also clarified that although the demand of having a stoppage of Duronto train at Jalandhar was justified but that it was not possible, as the Duronto is known for running from a start-to-stop route.

It needs to be mentioned here that the Railways had started the Duronto between Amritsar and Chandigarh from August 24. This is the first ever-direct train connecting the holy city to the state capital but with no stoppage in the city.

Jalandhar, September 26
Residents of the city owning properties in the areas falling in the schemes of the Jalandhar Improvement Trust have been demanding that the last date for getting registration of conveyance deeds on allotted rates should be extended beyond September 30.

Since there still are a few hundred registrations pending and the deadline is about to lapse, the residents have been demanding that the last date should be extended further. Many second and third time allottees have been claiming that they got a clearance for getting registration late and might not be able to complete official formalities in time.

Madan Lal Kanojia, general secretary, Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar, said that the residents today held a meeting and demanded that the last date be extended to March 31, 2012 so that the maximum number of people could draw benefit out of the scheme.

A trustee of the JIT, Shiv Dyal Chugh has also been claiming that residents were persuading him to get the deadline extended.

Executive Officer of Jalandhar Improvement Trust Avtar Singh Azad said that his staff was striving hard to meet the deadline and make maximum registries in time. He claimed that there were around 100 registries pending.

“Certain cases where court orders or legal heir certificates are required may take long. I hope all remaining cases would be sorted out in time”, he added.

About the mandi

Apni Mandi is organised around Pratap Bagh under the aegis of the market committee. The initial concept of the mandi was to provide a place for farmers to hold stalls to sell their produce directly to consumers. It was beneficial both for farmers and consumers. Later, instead of organising their stalls, the farmers started selling their produce to vegetable sellers who set up their stalls at the mandi.
