Suspected Maoists gun down BJD MLA
Bhubaneswar, September 24
In the first incident of its kind in Orissa, suspected Maoists today gunned down BJD legislator Jagabandhu Majhi and his security officer and seriously injured another person at a public meeting in Nawarangpur district today. Thirty-nine-year-old wheel chair-bound Majhi, a tribal leader who represents Umerkote constituency, was attending a public function at Bola village in Naxal-hit Raighar area to distribute land ‘pattas’ to tribals when three gunmen riding a motorcycle opened fire and killed him, Director General of Police Manmohan Praharaj said here.

NASA satellite’s debris hits Earth
Cape Canaveral, September 24
A six-tonne NASA science satellite pierced the atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean and fell back to Earth, the US space agency said today, but it was not yet known where the remains landed.
NASA said its decommissioned Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite, which took an unpredictable course as it tumbled through the upper atmosphere, fell to Earth on Saturday.

Jagjit Singh still critical
Mumbai, September 24
The condition of popular ghazal singer Jagjit Singh, who was operated upon at Lilavati Hospital here after suffering brain haemorrhage, continues to be “critical”, said hospital sources.
“This is to confirm that Jagjit Singh’s condition remains critical,” Niket V Mehta, managing trustee of Lilavati Hospital, said today. “We have to respect the patient’s privacy and therefore cannot comment further,” he said. The 70-year-old legend is currently in the ICU after undergoing emergency surgery for brain haemorrhage last evening. Brain hemorrhage is a known complication of uncontrolled hypertension or high blood pressure. — PTI

A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announced that it would oppose the proposed resolution seeking clemency to Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today said he would consult the Congress leadership on the issue.

India and China propose to institute a joint mechanism to Foreign Minister SM Krishna with his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi during the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ meeting in New York prevent the possibility of any misunderstanding between them in the event of the violation of the Line of Actual Control (LAC) unwittingly by either side.
