Protesting BJP workers clash with police
Jammu, July 30 The protesters were carrying banners and shouting slogans against the state and Central governments for ignoring the Jammu region. Addressing the party workers, Gupta said the successive state governments had discriminated against Jammu. He said all Central universities except the Central University of Jammu were functioning. He added that the BJP was concerned over the inordinate delay in making the Central University of Jammu functional. He said on the one hand the Congress leaders of Jammu were siding with the government and on the other they were complaining about the delay in making the Central university functional. He said the BJP would intensify its agitation if the university was not made functional at the earliest. Shiv Kumar Gupta, Vikram Randhawa, Karan Singh, Sanjeev Gupta, Jaideep Sharma, Sureshta Jamwal, Rita Jamwal, Ramesh Sharma, Balwan Singh, Rakesh Mishra, Ayodhya Kumar, Pardhumen Singh, Sunil Dogra, Jeet Angral, Munish Khajuria, Dinesh Gupta, ND Rajwal, Rajinder Sharma, Daleep Gupta, Vijay Sharma, Kuldeep Kandhari, Taseeem Sharma, Manav Gupta, Ajay Magotra, Rajeshwar Singh, Girdari Lal, Dan Saroop, Surinder Mahajan, Parshotam Dogra and Faqir Chand Azad were prominent among those who took part in the protest. |
Tourists re-discover Kashmir
Srinagar, July 30 The normalcy has been visible everywhere, in the rush of passengers at the Srinagar airport, in cricket tournaments, college festivals and musical evenings on the banks of the Dal Lake even as tourists thronged Gulmarg and Pahalgam, besides the gardens and Pari Mahal in the state capital. “Perception about Kashmir was the only problem. This year we have been able to sustain peace and normalcy which has led to a record number of tourists and (Amarnath) pilgrims,” said the Tourism Minister, Nawang Rigzin Jora. “Give me peace, I will strive to get all issues resolved and take its benefits to every household,” Chief Minister Omar Abdullah declared at a public meeting last week. People, tired of three successive summers of turmoil, have clearly been yearning for normal life, business and trade. And despite attempts to create disruptions, people this year refused to take the bait. The last fortnight of July witnessed four potentially volatile incidents, which could lead to more violence and disturbance. The killing of two young men, Mohsin Ahmad Wani and Mohammad Ashraf, in Sopore preceded the furore caused by the alleged molestation of a schoolgirl at Wanigam in the Pattam area, both in Baramulla district. Security forces, wrongly it appeared, were blamed in both the cases. But timely intervention of the police, civil administration and the Army helped cool down public anger. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tweeted, after the murder of Wani, a small businessman, that he was “shot by militants...no wonder my TL is silent as it wasn’t by Army (or the) Police”. Three days later, another young man, Mohammad Ashraf, was killed by unidentified gunmen. But neither these killings nor a ‘bandh’ called by hardliners to protest the arrest in the United States of the alleged ISI asset, Ghulam Nabi Fai, led to the kind of disruptions the Valley had seen during the last three years. The ‘positive trend’ continued even when a mischievous report about the alleged rape of a woman by Army personnel was circulated. Stone peltings and burning of government vehicles ominously signalled how fragile peace is in the Valley. But once again the Army and the police handled the situation well--clearly they too have learned their lessons-- and inquiries and investigations soon led to the woman’s family making contradictory statements and denying the charge. It has been a brilliant summer in the Valley so far and officials are hoping for peace to last. |
Improve public grievance redress system, says IGP
Jammu, July 30 Detailed deliberations were held on the targets fixed, especially with regard to the investigation of cases and their disposal, steps taken to arrest absconders, detention under the Public Safety Act in respect of hardcore criminals, overground workers of militants, drug peddlers, bovine smugglers, execution of processes and the production of witnesses in the courts of law for the expeditious trial of cases, besides other measures for the welfare of police personnel. Discussions were also held on the civic action projects identified by the DIGs and the SSPs in their respective areas for the benefit of general public, especially the youth and other weaker sections of society. Expressing satisfaction over the prevention and detection of crime as well as the achievements with regard to anti-militancy operations, the IGP underlined the need for a vigorous campaign against drug peddlers in the coming three months as the drug menace posed a grave threat to the new generation. He asked all the DIGs and SSPs to ensure proper response, promptness and transparency in working at the police station level. The IGP also emphasised on vigorous operations to neutralise surviving militants and make the Jammu region free from militancy. |
Class XII student stabbed to death
Jammu, July 30 The police said Sukhbir along with a friend was standing outside the school when two youths came on a motorcycle and started beating them. Sukhbir was rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) by some passersby, where he died. The police is questioning Sukhbir’s friend to ascertain the reason behind the murder and the identity of the assailants. However, no arrests were made till the reports last came in. A case under Section 302 of the RPC has been registered against the assailants at Gandhi Nagar police station. Kin of senior leaders make it
to Youth Cong new team
Jammu, July 30 Though the talent hunt programme was given much publicity, those who had not participated in it managed to get important positions in the party due to their political connections. The team of office-bearers of the Youth Congress was announced after a gap of two years. The new team has opened a Pandora’s box as a large number of the Youth Congress activists, who were not accommodated in it, have rushed to New Delhi to register their protest with the Congress high command. “We will not remain silent and watch the wrong policies of those at the helm of affairs,” a senior Youth Congress activist told The Tribune. He added that a meeting of all the deserving but ignored candidates had been called to devise the future course of action. Some of the ignored Youth Congress activists had sought an appointment with All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Rahul Gandhi to expose the “bungling” in the selection of the office-bearers. “Instead of giving some solid reasons for ignoring us, the leaders are giving us lame excuses,” said another Youth Congress leader. “We have informed the national Youth Congress leadership about the brewing resentment among the genuine party workers,” a leader camping in New Delhi told The Tribune over the phone. Sources in the Congress said due to the infighting in the party, some deserving candidates were ignored to accommodate the “blue-eyed” boys of both the warring factions to strike a balance. The faction owing allegiance to Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Saifuddin Soz as well as Soz’s detractors have managed to get their loyalists accommodated in the new team. Prominent Youth Congress leaders, who were not included in the new team, were Neeraj Gupta, Nitish Mahajan, Manjeet Singh Jatt, Imran Zafar, Bharat Priya, Zahid Sarfaraz Malik, advocate Shafiq ur Rehman, Shivan Satya Gupta, Amit Manhas, Varinder Singh Chib, Pankaj Chibber, Sajjad Tariq, Rakesh Sharma, Ashish Singh Kotwal and Ekta Koul. Imran Zafar, who had been ignord, was among the top six candidates in the talent hunt contest, which was organised by the party two years ago. |

Contractual college teachers go on fast
Srinagar, July 30 The contractual teachers have been on strike for the past more than two weeks, thus affecting studies in various colleges. There are 750 teachers working in different colleges in the Valley, who have been awaiting regular appointment and hike in salary. “Most of us have been working since 1995 and there is no concrete policy,” said Mohammad Maqbool, president of the Jammu and Kashmir College Contractual Teachers Association. “Let them give us an assurance that our demands will be fulfilled in a time frame,” Maqbool said. He added that only 20 per cent of the syllabus had been covered till now. — TNS |

3 held with fake stamps, vehicle RCs
Jammu, July 30 The accused, identified as Ravi Kumar of Nai Basti, Janak Singh of Satwari and Ashok Kumar of Chatha, were produced before the media here today. Acting on a tip-off, the police raided a house in the Digiana area and recovered several fake registration certificates, blank and prepared, and fake stamps of the ARTO, Jammu. The accused were arrested from different areas of the city later as they were not operating from any particular place. “The trio were active for the past many years and had made several fake RCs of both light and heavy vehicles,” said Rajeshwar Singh, SP, South. “They also used to renew driving licences by using the fake stamp of the ARTO. They used to pocket the tax amount that was to be paid to the RTO, thereby, causing loss to the state exchequer,” he added. A case had been registered under Sections 420, 465, 468 and 473 of the RPC. —
