A first: Amritsar starts process of UID numbers
Amritsar, May 24 Deputy Commissioner KS Pannu inaugurated the process which is being run by the National Security Depository Limited (NSDL) with the assistance of the Central and state governments. He said that in Punjab, the process would be undertaken by the Food and Civil Supplies Department, NSDL and State Bank of India. The NSDL has outsourced the project to a Delhi-based private firm Alankit. The objective is to allot a 12-digit number to each resident. This number will enable residents to receive the benefits of government-sponsored schemes. The residents will have to furnish identity and residential proofs. They then will have to give biometric impressions of their fingers, thumbs and eyes. However, children less than five years of age have been spared these tests. The entire district will be covered in the next six months. First in state

19 months on, pensioner yet to get VRS dues
Gurdaspur, May 24 Rajesh Verma, who used to work as a Development Officer before he opted for the VRS, claims that at the time of retirement he was given his dues in the form of gratuity, provident fund and leave encashment allowance. However, for reasons best known to the insurance company, his pension has not be paid to him for the last 19 months forcing him to run from pillar to post to get justice. Verma has filed as many as four RTI applications with the Branch Manager, United India Insurance Company, Gurdaspur, seeking to know why his pension is not being paid. However, none of the RTI applications has evoked any appropriate response from his former employers. The response evoked by all the four RTI applications is that “the department is looking into his case.” The latest RTI response, received by Verma on May 13, says that the petitioner’s application has been forwarded to the Head Office, Pension Department, as well as the Marketing Department, Regional Office, Chandigarh. Verma claimed that it was surprising that despite getting all internal clearances from the departments concerned, yet the insurance company was sleeping over his case. Not satisfied with the repeated replies, rather “non-replies”, to his RTI applications, an irked Verma has written to his superiors asking them what was stopping them from releasing his dues. Verma says, “I think some officers have been harassing me, which is completely unfair and unjustified. It is my legal right to take my benefits on time, but I fail to comprehend as to why officials are dilly-dallying over my case. The insurance company is a government organisation, but I think it is being run in an autocratic manner by a handful of senior officials.” |

Pending phone bill of Rs 2.65 lakh; hospital loses emergency number
Jalandhar, May 24 Interestingly, although the bill amount had been standing against the landline connection for the past several years, nobody in the hospital administration bothered to take notice of the staggering bill amount. As per the BSNL record, the landline connection is out of operation since October 2010. “The public is at receiving end as the emergency landline connection was the only hospital contact most of the people knew about. Moreover, it was the only landline number of the civil hospital rigorously publicised in the local media for the past several years,” said Jaswant Virli, General Secretary, Joint Action Committee, Civil Hospital, Jalandhar. Shashi Khera, Medical Superintendent, could not be contacted despite repeated attempts. However, sources in the civil hospital said that till last few years, the phone bill used to be either automatically waived off by the department of telecom or was paid by the health authorities. “We are uncertain whether the bill was routinely paid by the health department or was waived off by the telecom authority. However, it is sure that the hospital authorities never paid the bill in the past few years,” said a hospital employee. “As the hospital administration is not clear about the category of the landline connection, we have written to the BSNL to suggest us the best possible way so that landline services could be resumed,” he added. SK Nigam, General Manager, Telecom, BSNL, Jalandhar Circle, could not be contacted. |
