Victim’s parents run from pillar to post to get body

Tarn Taran, May 20
The parents of Harjit Singh (22), who became a victim of racial attack in London a week ago, have been moving from pillar to post to get the body for the last four days.

Father Wassan Singh and mother Harjit , belonging to Kallha village, 15 kms from here, told The Tribune that they have sent a letter to the Indian High Commission, England, authorising it to receive the body and send it to India as soon as possible.

The parents expressed resentment that no government official or politician had come to console them.

The parents said according to the rules, the UK Government would wait for 28 days, otherwise which it would cremate the body declaring it to be unclaimed.

The parents said they have written letters to Preneet Kaur, Union State Minister for External Affairs, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, Chairman, Punjab State Human Rights Commission, and other authorities to help them as the UK Government has demanding 6,000 pounds to send the body of their son to India.

Three killed as car, truck collide

Nawanshahr, May 20
Three persons, Jaswinder Singh, a bookseller at College Road, Ropar, his cousin Satinder Pal Singh, working as an engineer in Ranbaxy, and their five-year-old niece, Ravita, were killed when the car in which they were travelling collided with a truck near Kashmiri Vaishno Dhabha on the Nawanshhr-Jalandhar highway near Banga late last evening.

As per information, Jaswinder Singh and Satinder Pal Singh had gone to meet their sister at Jalandhar. Their niece, Ravita, came along with them to visit her maternal grandparents. The bodies were brought to the Banga Civil Hospital.

The police has registered a case.

Man drowns in sarovar

Amritsar: Tejinder Sngh of Katra Jaimal Singh drowned in the sarovar of Gurdwara Santokhsar, near Municipal Corporation office, here today. He had gone to pay obeisance at the gurdwara and take a holy dip in the sarovar.

An eyewitness, who saw him drowning, immediately raised an alarm and informed the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) authorities.

Police officials called divers to fish out the body. However, they could not find the body till the filing of the report.

Youth, father killed

Hoshiarpur: A youth, Jaspreet Singh, and his father Onkar Singh of Behwowal Chhanian died in an accident last night.

According to police sources, Jaspreet Singh along with his father and mother was going on his motorcycle (PB 35 C 9574) from Dasuya to Nangal Bihala. On the way a wood-laden tractor-trailer hit his motorcycle near his village, due to which Jaspreet Singh died on the spot. His father and mother, who got serious injuries, were admitted to the Civil Hospital, Dasuya, where the latter was under treatment and the former succumbed to his injuries.

The Dasuya police has booked tractor-trailer driver Bhela Ram of Duakhari.

Special polio campaign from May 22

Children of migrant labourers and other underprivileged classes are more vulnerable to poliomyelitis and more likely to be missed by immunisation and surveillance activities.

Keeping in view the fact, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has decided to organise a special Pulse Polio campaign for migratory population in Punjab.

Disclosing this here on Wednesday, Civil Surgeon Dr Sham Lal Mahajan said health workers would visit the jhuggies, etc, in slum areas, where migratory population had been residing, from May 22 to 24 to administer polio drops to children between the age group of zero to five years.

According to the District Immunisation Officer, Dr Ajay Bagga, 23,226 children between the age group of zero to five years of migratory population had been identified and would be administered polio drops in the special campaign. As many as 156 teams, comprising 312 health workers, would visit the houses where migratory population had been residing to administer bivalent oral polio vaccine. He appealed to the people to extend cooperation to the health personnel.

Four Pakistan nationals held

Pathankot, May 20
The BSF arrested four Pakistani nationals who crossed over to the Indian territory at the Indo-Pak border near Jaitpur check post in Bamial sector of the Narot Mehra constituency of Gurdaspur district, about 30 km from here, on Thursday.

They have been identified as Mohammad Zahrad, Aslam Gafoor, Mohammad Choudhry and Mohammad Shairav Khan, all resident of Shakargarh subdivision of Narowal district in Pakistan.

During questioning they said they inadvertently crossed the border.

Further investigation are on in this regard.

The SP, Bhupinderjit Singh Virk, said today that the arrested Pakistani nationals were not handed over to the district police till now by the BSF authorities.

Man commits suicide; wife arrested

Amritsar: Sukhpal Singh of Indira Colony in the Kot Khalsa area committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan on Friday. The police has arrested his wife and registered a case under Section 306 of the IPC against her and her paramour Prince. Paramjit Singh, brother of the deceased, in his complaint alleged that Manjit Kaur, wife of the deceased, had illicit relations with Prince of the same area and his brother used to object to their relationship. The police authorities said Prince was on a run after the registration of the case. They said whether Sukhpal had committed suicide or was killed by the two would be clear only after the postmortem report. — TNS

Rs 3.25 lakh snatched

Phagwara: Two motorcycle-borne armed youths snatched a bag containing Rs 3.25 lakh from Jagir Singh of Kotli Than Singh village near Tehsil-cum-Judicial Complex on Friday. The police has registered a case under Section 356 of the IPC. The DSP, Sandip Sharma, said on the complaint of Jagir Singh the police had registered a case. The DSP said Jagir Singh was facing a court case at the local court. The case had been filed against him by his daughter-in-law Rajwinder Kaur, who had alleged that her husband, who was in the Army, died on duty about 12 years back, but her father-in-law Jagir Singh had filed a false statement before the Army authorities saying that his deceased son was unmarried only to take Rs 4.5 lakh of gratuity and other service benefits of her deceased husband Santokh Singh. The DSP said it was learnt that Santokh Singh died only after a few days of his marriage with Rajwinder Kaur. The court had instructed Jagir Singh to deposit Rs 3.25 lakh as compensation to the widow, Rajwinder Kaur. — OC
