Gang of robbers busted, 5 held

Acting on a tip-off, the Civil Line police has busted a Delhi-based gang of robbers and arrested five persons. The police recovered a country-made pistol, 95 live cartridges of .12-bore gun, 120 cartridges of .32-bore gun and four sharp-edged weapons from them.

A person died and another was injured when a truck loaded with animals hit another truck coming from the opposite direction near Sarhali village, 25 km from here, late last evening.

One killed, 2 hurt in accidents

A man was killed, while another was seriously wounded when the motorcycle they were riding on was hit by a truck this evening. The victims were going to Malian Kalan village from Uggi village and had a head-on collision with the truck near Talwandi Slem village.

2 commit suicide
Phagwara, April 3
A young married woman, Harpreet Kaur, committed suicide by setting herself on fire after sprinkling kerosene on her clothes at the Satnampura locality here yesterday. She was immediately taken to the Civil Hospital, where she was declared dead. Mental stress due to family problems was said to be the cause of suicide.

Woman sets herself ablaze
Nakodar, April 3
A woman, Jatinder Kaur of Singhpur village in Mehtpur here, set herself ablaze due to dispute in the family and sustained critical burn injuries. In her statement to the Magistrate, Jatinder Kaur alleged that her husband and brother-in-law had purchased some property but they refused to give her share in the same.

Acting on a tip-off, the Civil Line police has busted a Delhi-based gang of robbers and arrested five persons. The police recovered a country-made pistol, 95 live cartridges of .12-bore gun, 120 cartridges of .32-bore gun and four sharp-edged weapons from them.

The arrested members of the gang are Gian Pinder Singh, Naginder Singh of Siraspur village, New Delhi, Paramjit Singh of Sham Nagar, New Delhi, Damanpreet Singh of Old Mahabir Nagar, New Delhi, and Gurpreet Singh of Gate Bhagtan Wala here.

A case under Sections 399 and 402 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against them at Civil Lines police station here.

During investigation, the role of a gun house has come to light whose owners allegedly used to supply arms and ammunition to the gangsters, who were involved in a number of looting incidents.

Varinder Kumar, Investigation Officer and in charge of Circuit House police chowki here, said a separate case under Section 29(B) of the Arms Act was registered against Karan Bhatia and his father Rajiv Bhatia, owners of the gun house. The accused were remanded in two-day police custody, he added.

Man booked for raping sister-in-law

Amritsar: The district police has booked Victor of the Islamabad area for allegedly raping his sister-in-law on March 24.

The victim stated to the police that the Victor took her to the bus stand on his motorcycle on some pretext where they had lunch together. She alleged that after having launch she fell unconscious. Victor took her to some unknown place where he repeatedly raped her. She alleged that Victor threatened to murder her and her family if she revealed the incident to anyone.

After her return on April 1, she revealed the whole episode to her family.

A case has been registered under Sections 363, 366 and 376 of the IPC at Civil Line police station.

The police authorities said no arrest had been made so far and raids were being conducted to nab the culprit.

Two arrested for murder

Pathankot: The Gurdaspur police yesterday arrested two persons for allegedly murdering Sardul Singh of Kotla Mugla village, who disappeared from the village on March 24.

The SSP, Varinderpal Singh, said Khazan Singh, brother of the deceased, had lodged a complaint of the missing of Sardul Singh on March 25 at Kallanaur police station.

The SSP said the next day on March 26, the police recovered the body of Sardul Singh from a field of the village and started investigation.

The SSP said after investigating, two persons, Labh Singh and his son Baljit Singh, residents of the same village, were arrested and a case under Section 302 of the IPC was registered against them. An old enmity is said to be the reason behind the murder, he added.

Purse snatched from woman

Tarn Taran: The city police has registered a case under Section 382 of the IPC regarding snatching of a purse from a woman four days back from the GT Road by two unidentified motorcycle-borne youths.

The victim, resident of the local Deep Avenue, in her statement to the police said the youths snatched her purse when she was turning to her residence in the evening. The purse contained her mobile phone and Rs 6,000.

Man held with 1 kg opium

Batala: The police has arrested a man with 1 kg of opium.

The SSP, Gurdeep Singh, told mediaperson here today that CIA in charge Sub-Inspector Arvinder Singh on a tip-off set up a naka near Patti Pakiwan village, which false under Ghania Ke Bhangar police station.

A Maruti car (HR-2JB-0093) was intercepted and on its search the police found 1 kg of opium. The driver of the car, Kamal Singh, resident of Damla village, Partapgarh district, Rajasthan, was arrested.

The police registered a case under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act.

Residents of several localities had to face much inconvenience due to non-availability of water.

Executive Officer Sandip Tiwari could not be contacted as he did not pick up the phone.

Despite efforts by government employees, the damage pipe could not be repaired till Sunday afternoon.

One killed as trucks collide

Tarn Taran, April 3
A person died and another was injured when a truck loaded with animals hit another truck coming from the opposite direction near Sarhali village, 25 km from here, late last evening.

The driver of the truck loaded with animals and his three associates have been booked under Sections 279, 337, 338, 427 and 420 of the IPC and Sections 10 and 11 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act-1960.

The accused have been identified as Mangal Singh, driver of the truck allegedly responsible for the accident, besides Vijay Kumar, Rinku and Amandeep Singh of Gurdaspur district.

The deceased has been identified as Karamjit Singh (35) of Baba Bakala. He was going from Malaut to Amritsar in a truck. Karamjit received serious injuries and was taken to a hospital in Amritsar, where he was declared dead by doctors.

The deceased has been identified as Santosh Mahato, while the injured as Lal Mahato.

A case was registered against the truck driver, who fled from the spot, the police said.

In another accident, a person sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision between Wagon R car and Tavera near Bajwa village at Shahkot.

Sanjeev Kumar, resident of Dhanoa district in Barnala, who sustained critical injuries, has been referred to the Jalandhar Civil Hospital.

2 commit suicide

The body of Harpreet Kaur was kept in the hospital mortuary for postmortem examination. It was learnt that the husband of the deceased was spending his days in jail in a criminal case.

In another incident, a boy, Amandeep, of Nangal Colony, committed suicide by jumping before a Jammu-bound train near Chachoki on the Phagwara-Goraya rail section yesterday.

The GRP has registered a case and sent the body for postmortem to the Civil Hospital.

Woman sets herself ablaze

Nakodar, April 3
A woman, Jatinder Kaur of Singhpur village in Mehtpur here, set herself ablaze due to dispute in the family and sustained critical burn injuries. In her statement to the Magistrate, Jatinder Kaur alleged that her husband and brother-in-law had purchased some property but they refused to give her share in the same.

She alleged that her husband often quarrelled with her at home without any reason.

The police said Jatinder Kaur had heated arguments with her husband today. Afterwords, she went inside the room and doused herself with kerosene and set herself ablaze at their residence.

Jatinder Kaur sustained 90 per cent burns and her condition was stated to be critical, the police added.
