Jalandhar, April 2
In a case of police highhandedness, a mason was allegedly picked up and brutally beaten up by cops at Rama Mandi police station last night.

Dharam Pal, a resident of Panch Rattan Colony in the Rama Mandi area, was allegedly picked up by the police on the charges of theft and tortured for over three hours.

In a complaint, along with medico-legal report, given to the City Police Commissioner, The mason, Dharam Pal, alleged that the police had picked him up unwarranted on the complaint of a tenant in a house of US-based NRI Chain Singh.

The complainant said Chain Singh had allotted him a job of construction and renovation of his house. Chain Singh’s tenant before going out of station last week, had requested him to stay at the house during night. Dharam Pal said he could not stay at the house on March 31 due to illness. The next day he noticed that a theft had been committed at the house and he even complained to Rama Mandi police station about it.

“Instead of initiating an enquiry, the police picked him up and detained him in the police station. The ASI, Jarnail Singh, along with another cop thrashed me with a belt,” he alleged. “I was released only after the intervention of certain respectable local persons,” he claimed.

When contacted, ASI Jarnail Singh said Dharam Pal was neither asked by Chain Singh, nor his tenant to stay at home. “Chain Singh had given the same responsibility to his in-laws. However, when they refused, Dharam Pal volunteered himself for the same. “We released him only after he levelled allegation on his labourers and promised us to bring them to the police station,” the ASI claimed.

When asked about injuries and findings of the medico-legal report, the ASI denied the torture and said Dharam Pal might himself have inflicted injuries on his body.

Change Of Khalsa College’s Status
Old students resent the move
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, April 2
Old students of Khalsa College, Amritsar, are peeved at the changing of status of 100-year-old institute to that of a university.

Giving a representation on the issue from the students’ side , Dr Harjinder Singh, a retired Deputy Director (Dental Health) from Jalandhar, has said the job of the college management committee is only to manage the affairs of the college and not to change the soul and spirit of the renowned institution.

Dr Harjinder has been a student of the college from primary school level to pre-medical. Supporting him for the cause is Parkash Singh Gill, a retired Landscape Officer, Municipal Corporation, Jalandhar, who too has been a student from 1962 to 1967. Gill said a lot of resentment prevailed among the old students of the college settled in Canada.

Brothers Col Tarjinderpal Singh (retd) and Dr Arjinderpal Singh Sekhon, both settled in the US, too, have expressed their concern on the matter. The twosome have been building a replica of the college there, said Dr Harjinder Singh.

Former students of the college have been demanding that a new place be selected for the construction of a new building and the heritage building be kept intact.

Khel Udyog Sangh flays concession of Rs 45 cr to ICC
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, April 2
The Khel Udyog Sangh has criticised the concession of Rs 45 crore granted to the International Cricket Council (ICC) at the cost of the local cottage industry.

Instead of extending such largesse to rich entities like the ICC, the government should come to the aid of the local cottage industry since it is on the verge of closure due to the faulty policies of the Centre and the state government, Ravinder Dhir, president of the sangh, said

He added that apart from the fact that their interests had been ignored by both the ruling coalition and the Congress, the decision of imposing VAT on the sports industry had virtually sounded the death knell for their sector.

“What is the rationale of imposing the tax when the Goods and Sales Tax (GST) regime comes into force in the country from the next fiscal year? Surely, the state government can afford to appease thousands of workers and entrepreneurs by waiving less than Rs 2 crore tax collections for this year,” Ravinder Dhir pointed out.

Castigating the SAD-BJP for reneging on their promise, he said they had been assured that in case the coalition came to power the VAT on their sector would be waived. “But we are waiting even after four years for the government to honour its commitment,” he added.

“We are waiting for the forthcoming Assembly polls to teach the promise breakers a lesson,” he warned.
