Grandfather booked for girl’s murder
Amritsar, February 7 It may be recalled that the Gumtala police had found the body of an unidentified girl in the Gumtala drain on December 15, 2010. She was later identified as Mamta, who had been missing for a couple of days at that time. Her family members learnt about her death from media reports. Earlier, the cantonment police initiated the action under Section 174 of the CrPC taking it as an accidental death caused due to her slipping into the drain. According to details, the postmortem report of the girl revealed that the girl was strangled to death. The police immediately swung into action and launched investigations. During the probe, the police zeroed in on the grandfather of the victim, Satnam Singh, a resident of Vir Singh Colony at Mule Chak village, who as per the police officials was not of good character. “It was found that the girl had resisted his sexual advancements and threatened to reveal this to her family members. This enraged the accused who strangled her to death and later threw her body in the drain,” said Ramesh Chander, in charge of Gumtala police post and investigation officer. He said a case under Sections 302 and 201 of the IPC was registered in this regard and raids were being conducted to nab the culprit, who had been absconding after committing the crime. Pathankot: The police today busted a five-member gang of thieves with the arrest of two of its members, identified as Ranjit Kumar, resident of Abrol Nagar, and Satish Kumar of Darasalam, and recovered one motorcycle from them. The DSP, Naresh Dogra, said following a tip-off the police laid a naka on the Jalandhar-Dalhousie road near the Sailli area and nabbed the two thieves. During preliminary interrogation, the thieves admitted that they were planning to target commercial areas of the town to lift parked vehicles. A case has been registered. Pathankot: A person was injured in a attack here today. According to information, Amarjit, a vegetable seller and resident of Kazipura, was attacked by another vegetable seller with more than five accomplices when he was selling vegetables in the locality. Amarjit was rushed to the Civil Hospital where his condition is stated to be serious. He sustained head injuries and fractured one hand. The SHO, Manoj Kumar, said the police received a complaint and further investigations were on. |

DHO to file defamation suit
Tarn Taran, February 7 The DHO, who had gone to the shops to collect samples of eatables, was not only attacked, but also his turban was removed by the shopkeepers. The DHO said a case was registered against the shopkeepers and some other influential persons for attacking him by the police, but two weeks had passed and no arrest had been made so far. He said in spite of feeling sorry for their action, the representatives of the shopkeepers were levelling false allegations of demanding bribe on him. The DHO declared that he had collected all documents and was going to file a suit of defamation against the persons levelling allegations of demanding bribe on him. The DHO said he would approach Akal Takht for action against those responsible for insulting his hair and removing his turban. The DHO claimed that Health Minister Prof Laxmi Kanta Chawla had assured him of all cooperation and he would fight till got justice. |

3 killed in mishaps
Phagwara, February 7 An unidentified person was run over by a train near Chiherru village, while another unidentified person was killed by a train near Nangal Khaira village yesterday. The bodies of all three persons were sent to the Civil Hospital for postmortem. One dies Pathankot: One person was killed and another sustained serious injuries in a road accident on the Pathankot-Jammu road here yesterday. According to the police, a Santro car going towards Jammu was hit by a tipper, loaded with sand and stone coming from the opposite side, near Sujanpur on the Pathankot-Jammu road as driver of the tipper lost control over the vehicle. Gokhal Kumar, who was driving the car, died on the spot, while other occupant Deepak Kumar sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Civil Hospital. SHO Rajinder Minhas said the police had registered a case against the driver of the tipper, who fled after the accident. 9 sheep killed Hoshiarpur: Nine sheep were killed and about half a dozen wounded when a private minibus hit the flock of sheep near Chabbewal, 8 km from here, this afternoon. According to police sources, Rania, one of the owners of the flock of sheep from Ambala, was also wounded and was admitted to the local Civil Hospital. There were about 150 sheep in the flock. The accident occurred due to slippery on the road. |

Yellow smut attacks wheat crop in Kandi area
Hoshiarpur, February 7 A team of agriculture officials had visited the affected areas and instructed farmers to control its further attack. About 2,000 litres of propyconazole medicine had been acquired, which was being given to the farmers for spraying it in the affected fields on 50 per cent subsidy to avoid its further spreading. Dr Sarbjit Singh Kandhari suggested to blend 200 ml propyconazole with 100 litres of water for spraying. He further appealed to the farmers to regularly check their standing crops and in case of any sign of yellow smut they should immediately inform the agriculture officer of their respective area so that necessary steps could be taken to control the disease. — OC |

Farmers stage dharnas
Tarn Taran, February 7 Satnam Singh Pannu, state president of the KSC, while addressing the gathering demanded for total waiving of the debt standing with the farmers and also demanded Rs 2,250 as the MSP for wheat as recommended in Dr Swaminathan report. Devinderjit Singh Dhillon, state vice-president of the PKS, while addressing the farmers at the DC’s office condemned the state and the Union Government for their anti-farmer policies. The organisation also presented memorandums of demands to the officials. |

Privatisation of polytechnics opposed
Hoshiarpur, February 7 Many of the parents assembled at the college last evening and opposed the privatisation of polytechnic colleges. In a press note issued here today one of the parents R.K. Sharma stated that on the one side Union Human Resources Minister Kapil Sibal was stating to provide free education to all students of the country, whereas on the other side the Punjab Government was proposing to privatise government polytechnic colleges. The privatisation would make the education costlier and majority of the poor students would be deprived of getting education. The parents urged the government to withdraw the proposal, failing which parents along with their wards would launch an agitation. —

Making teachers computer literate
Nawanshahr, February 7 The IT Academy was set up in January last year and the special training workshops for schoolteachers were started in June last year, said Paramjit Singh Anand, Manager of the academy, adding that so far more than 600 teachers belonging to Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar, Kapurthala, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Amritsar, Muktsar, Faridkot, Ferozepur, Ludhiana, etc, had been imparted basic computer training, like using Microsoft Word for making data files, using Power Point for preparing lesson plans, using Internet for downloading requisite information and photographs for preparing lesson plans and Excel Word for preparing different proformas related to the Education Department. Besides, the clerical staff of the Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar district had also been imparted computer training to enable them to use computers for doing day-to-day office work more efficiently. The teachers also seem quite enthusiastic about the computer training seminars. While sharing their views, schoolteachers Des Raj, Vijay Singh, Kashmir Singh, Birpal Singh and Manoj Kumar said the computer training seminars-cum-workshops at the IT Academy had been updating their knowledge and enabling them to face the challenges of the present era. |
