Gurdaspur, February 1
Clearly rattled by the massive gathering at Capt Amarinder Singh’s Jan Sampark rally held here a fortnight ago, the ruling SAD-BJP combine, through its youth wing, tried to counter the political implications of the Congress public meeting by organising a conference at the same venue where SAD (Youth wing) patron Bikramjit Singh Majithia lambasted the Congress in particular and Capt Amarinder Singh in general.

The irony was inescapable. Today’s youth rally was targeted at the motivating young SAD workers for the next elections, but the youth content was clearly invisible with the majority of workers being ‘over aged’.

Apprehending danger that hundreds of unemployed teachers, who for the past several days are protesting at Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan’s residence, near here, may play spoilsport, the Gurdaspur police made elaborate arrangements to ensure that no untoward incident took place.

SSP Varinder Pal Singh personally monitored the situation and also ensured that there were no traffic snarls on the busy Batala-Gurdaspur road which was used by the workers to reach the venue.

If the Congress rally saw nearly 40,000 people making their presence felt, today’s proceedings, going by rough estimates, were attended by about 30,000 workers. However, each and every speaker harped from the dais that “our gathering is much more than what the Congress managed.”

If Congress leaders took pot shots at the SAD and Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal at its rally, today it was Majhitia’s turn to pay his rival party in the same coin.

Launching a virulent attack on Capt Amarinder Singh, Majithia questioned the former Chief Minister’s “wisdom on remaining quiet when the CBI gave the clean chit to his fellow Congressmen Jagdeesh Tytler and Sajan Kumar for their alleged role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.” Taking on the UPA government, Majithia said, “Rs 17 lakh crores of money of people aligned with the Congress is lying in Switzerland’s banks. The UPA should reveal the names of people who have stashed unaccounted for money in Swiss banks.

Akali sources reveal that Qadian MLA Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal brought the maximum number of workers to the rally although other senior Gurdaspur SAD leaders also contributed to the event in various ways.

Prominent among others who were present were Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon, Ministers S.S. Langah, S.S. Sekhwan and Balbir Singh Baath, MLAs G.S. Babbehali, L.S. Lodhinangal, Jagdeesh Sahni and PEDA Vice-Chairman Sanjeev Malhan.

Deficiency in service:
Firm told to pay relief
Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, February 1
The District Consumer Court headed by president PD Goel, has ordered the India Today Book Club (ITBC), New Delhi, and Premier Sales Promotions (P) Limited (PSPL), Bangalore, to pay Rs 10,000 as compensation and litigation expenses to Ravi Kumar Jain of the local Tagore Market within one month.

Jain filed a complaint against the ITBC and the PSPL on the ground that he was a regular subscriber of India Today vide subscription No IT 1886789 for the past 15 years and the latter offered a scheme for promoting the sale of their magazines.

According to the scheme, if a customer purchases certain prescribed books circulated by the ITBC, then the consumer, his wife and one child aged below 5 years were entitled to a free holiday trip to Goa, Gangtok or Darjeeling for two nights and three days with accommodation, meals and return air tickets.

The said offer was accepted by Jain as he purchased some books after paying Rs 3,198 through VPP and also got a unique number for claiming the offer, a holiday voucher and the membership number. On the directions of the PSPL, he, along with his wife, sent a draft for Rs 899 in favour of the PSPL to avail the offer.

Jain sent emails to the company from time to time with regard to the date and destination of the free trip, but failed to get any reply.

The court held that the ITBC and the PSPL had failed to provide the aforesaid free holiday trip to Jain, which amounts to deficiency in service under unfair trade practice.

Canals in bad health, govt instructions fall on deaf ears
Ashok Kaura

Phagwara, February 1
The Punjab Government’s instructions have fallen on deaf ears as the officials have turned a blind eye to the pathetic condition prevailing in the small and big irrigation canals of the state.

The government had instructed the officials concerned to launch cleanliness drives to free these canals of garbage and provide a new lease of life to irrigation.

This correspondent took a round of small canals, passing through the Hadiabad, Dosanjh Kalan Road, Chachoki and Urban Estate localities in Phagwara and found the canals in bad health.

Several encroachments also stood tall on the land of the Irrigation Department, it was observed.

Suresh Arora, a resident of Urban Estate, said the area stinks due to blockage and rotting of garbage in the canal.

The canals were also infected with several illegal constructions. Some people had even extended their houses on to the canals by constructing pucca lanters on them.

SDM Amarjit Paul said he would take up the matter on top priority to remove all encroachments on the canals. He said officials of the Irrigation Department would soon be summoned to act accordingly.
