Aujla (Gurdaspur), December 5
Manpreet Singh Badal’s bandwagon rolled into this non-descript village, 23 kms from here, as part of his ‘Jago Punjab Yatra’ and the former Finance Minister immediately struck an emotional chord with the gathering which raised cheers every time he spoke about the “ills plaguing Punjab which has slithered to No 26 out of 28 states in terms of development.”

Manpreet’s emotional range rivalled that of the most inspired actors as he managed to mesmerise the audience with Urdu couplets with special references being made to the various problems being faced by this border state.

Manpreet was here on the invitation of Swaran Singh Aujla, a Punjab and Haryana High Court advocate. A loud cheer went up as his cavalcade comprising of 12 vehicles rolled into this village in the afternoon.

His visit today holds significance as Aujla falls under the Dhariwal Assembly Segment represented by the Punjab Agriculture Minister S.S Langah in the Vidhan Sabha. He not only carried the audience with him but also managed to dent a massive chunk of rural youth votes with his visit today.

The former Finance Minister was accompanied by Beas MLA Manjinder Singh Kang and Shaheed Bhagat Singh’s nephew Abhey Singh Sandhu.

In his emotionally surcharged speech, Manpreet laid emphasis on the statement that “I am in politics but I am not a politician. I am here to cleanse the corrupt political system of the state where 95 paise out of every rupee lands in the pockets of corrupt politicians.”

“Punjab is sick. It needs a good doctor. There are so many problems plaguing Punjab that it will take nearly two decades for it to come to terms with itself. Today I am giving a wake up call to all Punjabis. It is high time that we get on with the onerous task of rebuilding the state where poverty, drugs and illiteracy have been pushed to the forefront by politicians lacking vision,” said Manpreet.

Speaking of a “new Punjab” Manpreet said, “Punjab needs to regain its lost pride and glory. We have landed ourselves with a massive debt. It will be our grandchildren who will have to repay this debt. The politicians of Punjab can not rise above vested interests. It is only the common man who can play a bigger role in developing the state. This state has enough resources but politicians are exploiting everything for their own nefarious designs.”

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, December 5
The staff from four government-aided polytechnics of the state expressed resentment over the decision of the Punjab Technical Education Directorate to discontinue 95 per cent grant from next year onwards.

The four aided polytechnics in the state, which have got a written communication in this regard, include Mehr Chand Polytechnic, Jalandhar; Guru Nanak Dev Polytechnic, Ludhiana; Ramgarhia Polytechnic, Phagwara and Thapar Polytechnic, Patiala.

Addressing the press conference, Baldev Singh, principal of Mehr Chand Polytechnic, Jalandhar, said they had been conveyed the message by the director technical education, VK Sharma.

The principal said under such circumstances, the 50-year polytechnics would either have to shut down or increase by four times the fee levied from students.

This would put an undue financial pressure on the students, he pointed out.

Principal Vir Singh of Ramgarhia Polytechnic said, “The next possible suggestion given to them was to increase the teacher-student ratio,” which he said was not possible.

The principals said that the polytechnics were showing good academic performances with students getting good placements. They said none of the seats with any of the four colleges was going vacant, for the past many years.

Vice principal, Baldev Singh, of Guru Nanak Polytechnic, demanded that the directorate should withdraw its decision, or else the polytechnic staff and students would have to start an agitation.
