Chidambaram eases curbs on farmers

The Union Home Minister, P. Chidambaram, who today found himself at the receiving end of demands and petitions for improving the lot of people living in border areas, agreed to extend the time for farmers to work in their fields beyond the border fencing.

Centre withdraws CM, Deputy CM’s security

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son-cum-Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, both under Z-plus security, are at present in the same boat as Beas legislator Manjinder Singh Kang with regard to their security covers. The Centre in a recent review has withdrawn the security cover of both Badals.

It was darkness in the late afternoon as duststorms and chilly winds lashed Chandigarh and New Delhi, heralding the arrival of an early winter. As the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir experienced the season’s first snowfall, the ripple-down effect was untimely heavy rains and hailstorm, with the temperature plummeting and people scampering for woollens in the hill states.

A Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between India and Japan is unlikely to be signed during the Prime Minister's three-day visit to Japan, beginning October 24. Though several rounds of negotiations have taken place, the signing of the agreement will have to wait for a while.

The sacked IPL Commissioner, Lalit Modi has failed to respond to the show cause notice issued to him by the Ministry of External Affairs, regarding revoking of his passport. In case, he fails to respond to the notice by the end of this month, he stands to lose his passport.
