SSP Narinder Bhargav, while paying tributes to Dehal, said the idea of the tree plantation was mooted by him and he had made all the arrangements, including saplings from the Forest Department, for the purpose.

Earlier in the day, addressing sarpanches, panches, representatives of NGOs and prominent persons at Tajowal village, Gurpreet Deo, DIG, Ropar Range, said, “The district police has given a new dimension to the concept of community policing by lending a helping hand to the residents of a number of villages situated near the Sutlej when the Dhussi bundh at Tajowal-Mandala and Burj Tehal Dass was on the verge of having a breach. The endeavour has not only saved villagers from the fury of floods but it would also go a long way in strengthening the police-public coordination.”

Deo was here to inaugurate a tree plantation drive at the Dhussi bundh with an aim to compensate the cutting of trees during the rescue operation as well as to strengthen the bundh by checking soil erosion in future. To give a fillip to community policing, drives to check environment pollution, problem of traffic on main roads, female foeticide and drug addiction would also be launched by the police with the cooperation of NGOs and prominent people, said the DIG, adding that village-level committees would be constituted to make these drives mass movements.

MLA Jatinder Singh Kariha, SSP Narinder Bhargav, Phillaur Range DFO Chaman Lal, Market Committee vice-chairman Sham Sunder Jadla, residents of Tajowal, Mandala and Chakli Sujatpur villages, among others, also spoke. The volunteers, who had assembled in the city, first organised a convention at the Desh Bhagat Yaadgar Hall under the banner of the Volunteer Teachers Association and later blocked BMC Chowk for over half an hour.

The volunteers were stopped by the police while they were marching towards PAP Chowk with an intention to block the GT Road. The blockade was lifted on the intervention of police officials, who assured them to facilitate their meeting with the Chief Minister on October 18.

The traffic was disrupted on the Jalandhar-Kapurthala road for almost an hour and the police had to divert the vehicles heading towards the ISBT from BSF Chowk via Ladowali Road.

Ajmer Aulakh, president of the association, said over 7,500 volunteer teachers had been working in government primary, middle and secondary schools of the state for the last six years and these teachers should be regularised.

He said if the government failed to meet their demand, another protest would be organised on October 22.
