Employment office launches domestic helpline in Bathinda
Bathinda, September 11 Under the domestic helpline
programme, 17 mechanics have enrolled themselves with the employment office so far to make their services available to the people for repair of household appliances and other items. Besides the carpenters and plumbers, the mechanics will provide services for repairing air-conditioners and refrigerators, scooter, TV, invertor and
stabiliser, mobile, electric appliances and computer hardware. Talking to TNS here, the deputy director, District Employment Generation and Training,
Bathinda, Harpal Singh said the domestic helpline had been launched in view of the reported incidents of loot and robbery in various parts of the country, being committed by unidentified persons who entered the houses, posing as mechanics, and looted the women seeing them alone there. He said this domestic helpline would prove helpful in checking such incidents as the members of the helpline would be issued identity cards by his office after proper verification. He said for the time being, an air conditioner and refrigeration mechanic Harpal Singh, whose mobile phone number is 94659-49077, had been made the convener of the
helpline. He would send mechanic for the repair of appliances and other items whenever he would receive a complaint from the local residents, the deputy director added. The deputy director further said all these persons were qualified and experienced. He also said now a meeting of the enrolled mechanics would be held on September 13 in his office where an in charge of the helpline would be appointed. He said genuine rates for the repairs would also be fixed. He said if any other qualified and experienced person wanted to get himself enrolled with the
helpline, he could do the same. The list of enrolled mechanics, with their mobile or base phone numbers, would be displayed at the public places, like railway station, bus stand, post office, employment office, he added. |

Cop hits trader, vision loss feared
Bathinda, September 11 According to sources, the injured Bhushan Kumar was sitting at his provision store located near the canal department office, late on Thursday evening, when one Pawan Kumar, a gateman in the railways, barged inside his shop and picked some cold drinks and other eatables, without his permission. Irked, Bhushan rebuked him and asked him to leave the shop. Both indulged in a verbal duel but after the intervention of the people assembled there, Pawan left the place but vowed revenge later. Later, Pawan along with his brother Rajiv Kumar, a constable in the
PCR, came to see Bhushan when he was at his brother's shop, located nearby. Without any verbal exchange, both Rajiv and Pawan assaulted him. Claiming he was a law enforcer, the cop Rajiv Kumar punched Bhushan in the eye and both fled from the spot leaving him with a bleeding eye. Meanwhile, people informed the canal colony police station and rushed Bhushan to the Civil Hospital, from where he was reportedly referred to the government medical college,
Faridkot. Acting upon the complaint, the Canal Colony police booked the accused duo under sections 451, 379, 323 and 34 of the
IPC. Speaking to TNS, the SHO Canal Colony police station, UC Chawla said a blood sample of Pawan Kumar has been sent for medical examination to ascertain whether he was under the influence of some intoxicant, when the incident took place. Further, he said the victim's kin had claimed that he had lost vision in the eye and police was waiting for the medico-legal report before taking further steps. When asked about departmental action against the cop, the SHO said it was reported that at the time of the incident, he was not in official uniform. Despite this, police was verifying the facts. |

Gang canal, Rajasthan feeder running below capacity?
Sriganganagar, Sept 11 Speaking to The Tribune, he recalled that the flow was recorded as 2,000 cusecs only on July 22, this year. The Samiti had faxed a memorandum to the Central government, Punjab and Rajasthan government to apprise them that 60 per cent of the canals, sub-canals were lying dry in the twin districts of Sriganganagar and Hanumangarh but none bothered to divert the surplus water that crossed the international boundaries, he regretted. Quoting the data obtained from the official sources on Saturday, he said the outflow of water from the Ranjeet Sagar dam was 11,776, Bhakra Dam 44,783 and Pong Dam 18,774 cusecs today. The northern states had arranged to draw 17,385 cusecs through the Upper Bari Doaba canal, 850 cusecs Kashmir canal, 17500 Bhakra main canal, 12,622 cusecs Sirhind canal, 11,192 cusecs Ferozepur feeder whereas discharge was just 6,000 cusecs against the 18,000 cusecs capacity in the Rajasthan feeder. Bikaner (Gang) too was running below its capacity. Sehgal further said the Centre as well as the state government in the north region had been apathetic to the maintenance of the canal system. Even when plenty of water was available, there had been a complete failure on the part of these governments in utilising the same properly to benefit the farming community. Water management should be the given priority while taking up development plans for the coming year, he demanded. |

BSF booster dose for green cause
Jalalabad (Ferozepur), September 11 A formal beginning of this exercise was marked with the plantation of saplings by Sher Singh Ghubhaya, MP, Vimal Satyarthi, DIG, BSF, Abohar sector, SPS Sandhu, commandant, 30 battalion, BSF, other officials and Mahila Praharies at a function organised in the BSF Chakarianwala Campus, here recently. Talking to the TNS, Satyarthi said all battalions in the Abohar sector had been entrusted the task to plant at least 10,000 saplings in their respective areas. He said a major part of the border in this sector fell in the desert area. Hence, its green cover was necessary to maintain ecological balance as well as suitable climatic conditions for the jawans. “Each personnel of the BSF would not only plant 10 saplings but also take care of them throughout his stay in the unit. During his outstation posting, he would hand over the trees to his reliever,” pointed out Satyarthi. He said saplings were being taken from the forest department, banks and other organisations. Ghubhaya, while lauding the efforts made by the BSF, said the SAD-BJP combine government led by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had been carrying out a number of exercises to increase the forest cover in Punjab. |

Implementation of abacus scheme stopped
Chandigarh, September 11 The abacus, also called a counting frame, is a calculating tool for performing arithmetic processes. In their petition placed before the Bench of Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel and Justice Ajay Tewari, Panchkula-based Semas Abacus and Mental Arithmetic Academy Pvt Ltd and another petitioner asserted: “Under the programme, the students of Class III shall be taught simplified and quick means of calculation in mathematics with the help of the abacus”. Seeking directions for quashing “the wholly
unfair, unreasonable and illogical tender for the abacus programme”, the petitioners said it was a “mere farce and total fraud”. They alleged “absolutely absurd, irrational and tailor-made terms and conditions have been stipulated for extraneous considerations so as to solely suit and favour respondent UCMAS India Pvt Ltd. Counsel for the petitioner Sameer Sachdeva added: “All-out efforts are being made to keep the petitioners and other similarly placed bidders in the dark by ensuring smooth platform for UCMAS to grab the contract”. |
Youth throng turban tying training camp
Bathinda, September 11 A member of the Youth Welfare Club, Khemuana, Gurpreet Singh said The Tribune on Saturday the camp was being run under the command of president of the Sardarian Youth Club, Satnam Singh. He added that Satnam had been organising such free camps in villages to connect the Sikh youth with their religion and culture. He said a large number of Sikh youths were coming to the Khemuana camp daily for training in tying the turban in a proper manner. Besides, the youths were also being inspired to work against the drug consumption in their respective areas, he added. He said the camp would conclude on September 16. On the day, the participating youths would also be
