Farmers, workers to stage dharna
Bathinda, September 10 Enthusiastic leaders of the front today stated that the protest would expose the "crooked and anti-farmers" policies of the state government in the presence of a massive gathering. Claiming that the movement was gaining momentum, general secretary of the Bharti Kisan Union (Ekta) Sukhdev Singh Kokri Kalan said, "The front activists are holding nukkad meetings and using public announcement system to make people join hands to give a jolt to the government, whose representatives are just minting money by befooling the innocents." "We are collecting reports from villages and our assessment is that a majority of the villagers including farmers and farm workers are fed up with the fake promises of the state government. The dharnas throughout the state would give them a channel to vent their anger," Kokri Kalan spoke further. Later, a number of leaders of the common front of the 17 organisations assembled at the Teachers' Home here and lashed out the state government, saying, "Though leaders of the SAD-led Punjab government claim they are pro-farmer, in fact, the state government is more active than the UPA-led union government, in implementing the anti-farmer policies." Taking a dig over the slogan of the state government "Raaj Nahi Seva", the leaders alleged, "Since the SAD (B) came to power hardly a single decision was taken in favour of poor and deprived section. The leaders are busy in lining their pockets and looting the state, be it through selling of public property or promoting the private sector at the cost of public institutions." Disclosing the major issues those would be focused on during the protest, the leaders said the recently imposed taxes on the agricultural motor pumps, domestic power bills for labourers, hike in domestic power rates, conditional waivers and prevalence of caste-based discrimination, would be criticized. Further, they listed the allotment of 10 Marla plots each to homeless people, space for dumping waste, control over inflation, strengthening the public distribution system and proper disbursement of pensions, among their demands. They also showed resentment against the steps of the state government allegedly leading towards the privatization of the electricity department and the irregularities in wages under the MNREGA scheme. Among others, Buta Singh of BKU Ekta (Punjab), Shingara Singh of BKU Ekta (Ugrahan), Surmukh Singh Selbra of BKU (Krantikari), Sukhdev Singh Nathana of Jamhoori Kisan Sabha, Harvinder Singh Sema of Mazdoor Mukti Morcha and Mahipal of Dehati Mazdoor Sabha were present at the meeting.
