Ferozepur, September 3 Before launching this exercise, the local unit of the MGSIPAP will carry out a technical study of the entire flood-prone areas with the active participation of locals, who have witnessed floods in the past many decades. A team of the disaster management cell of the MGSIPAP led by its state in-charge Sukhpal Singh Gill made a tour to various flood-prone areas located in the vicinity of Sutlej to make a list of tasks, .supposed to be carried out in these pockets to train people in disaster management. “We want that residents of the flood-prone areas must know how to give first aid in case of an emergency. Besides swimming and diving, they should also know how to rescue people trapped in the gushing river waters during the floods,” said Gyan Singh, regional project coordinator, MGSIPAP, Ferozepur. “Today, we have taken a feel of the area with the help of officials of different departments and residents of the affected villages. The plan will be prepared after carrying out a technical study of the area by experts,” he pointed out. He added that the team had suggested that all those, who had made their dwellings inside both the embankments of river area, must be shifted outside permanently to save them from the fury of floods. “Gill interacted with the residents of those villages today where paddy, fodder and other crops suffered damages after the water entered the fields when the Sutlej overflowed about a week ago so that their suggestions can be incorporated while preparing a blue print for the flood protection measures also,” the regional project coordinator, MGSIPAP, said. Meanwhile, JP Singh, deputy director, department of rural development and panchayat, said the residents of flood-prone areas would have to start water harvesting besides setting up recharging well in their respective land holdings as it would minimise the threat of floods on the one hand and also recharge the underground water table. It would help in checking the problem, he said. |
