Deepkamal KaurTribune News Service

Jalandhar, February 8
Having confronted a lot of opposition from candidates in the last session, the Punjab Technical University (PTU) authorities have decided not to hold any centralised manual counselling on Class XII merit basis for admission to engineering colleges this time.

After completing two rounds of online CET counselling, the seats will go into management quota allowing all the 125 colleges to fill up vacant of the total 26,000 seats on their own. The colleges will be directed to give priority to the CET rank holders and subsequently fill remaining seats on the Plus Two merit basis.

Announcing the modalities of BTech admission, PTU Vice-Chancellor Dr Rajneesh Arora said the university may also hold a mock online CET counselling session this year and distribute awareness posters among the candidates to eliminate the chances of any confusion.

He gave the admission schedule of the coming session. “CET will be on May 2. Result will be declared on May 20. Counselling will begin on June 1 and be over by July 10. Management quota admissions will close by July 31 so that new session begins on August 2.”

A meeting to discuss the modalities of online counselling for this session will be held tomorrow at the campus which will be attended by representatives of all participating universities and officials of National Informatics Centre (NIC). The VC said the Board of Governors meeting at Chandigarh on February 11 would finalise the name of registrar, three deputy registrars, two controllers of examination and four deans. Interviews for the remaining posts would be held after convocation scheduled on February 25, he added.

“Once we are armed with adequate staff, we will begin with regular assessment of all our colleges,” Dr Arora said. Dean Academics Dr N.P. Singh added, “We are in the process of making academic assessment of all colleges which will include academic performance of students (in terms of number of compartments that the students of each college were getting in semester examination), infrastructure set up and qualification of staff.”

Advisor to VC, Nachhatar Singh divulged that the university was also in the process of setting up its own regional centres at Amritsar, Mohali, Ludhiana and Bathinda which will not just assist in making regular checks in colleges falling in their areas but also be venues for conducting skill development courses as per industrial need of the areas.

Jalandhar, February 8
While EGS volunteer Kirnajeet Kaur succumbed to her burn injuries after herself afire, the leaders gave the unfortunate incident a political colour by their statements.

While former Congress MP Rana Gurjit Singh demanded resignation of Education Minister Upinderjeet Kaur on moral grounds as she could not even turn up at the spot to listen to the grievances of the agitated volunteers despite being present in Kapurthala, DCC President and Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira sought a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Rana Gurjit also demanded registration of criminal case against the DSP for allegedly provoking the volunteer to self-immolate after his suspension, the ruling SAD-BJP leaders including a former minister Raghubir Singh and Improvement Trust Chairman Hira Lal Dhir sought lodging of a case against Rana Gurjit Singh for allegedly instigating the agitators not to climb down from the water tank after the immolation bid by Kiranjit Kaur.

Meanwhile, the Convenor of Para Medical Contract Employees Union Bajinder Pal Singh Randhawa and district secretary of Pendu Mazdoor Union flayed the administration in handling the situation.

PMU State President Tarsem Peter said, “It is an unfortunate incident… the government has to take the blame. It was at the forefront while delivering fake promises at poll-rallies, but has turned a deaf ear to the peoples’ problems now.

The ongoing issue between the employees of the Municipal Corporation and Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Singh Bhatia was today resolved with both sides agreeing on cancellation of cross FIRs. Municipal Secretary Ashok Kumar Sharma, however, has been suspended.

Mayor Rakesh Rathour made this announcement today evening giving out his reason, “Sharma faces the order as he reached out to the union despite a compromise on the issue. The matter had been resolved in my office after the incident of his alleged manhandling by Bhatia but he went ahead taking support from the union.”

The residents will heave a sigh of relief for the MC employees would resume work from tomorrow morning. But many believe that the MC Secretary had been made a scapegoat in the whole episode. “While he had been demanding justice for his alleged manhandling in the office, he is being punished for no reason. All those who had assaulted Bhatia and had created ruckus in the office of Bhatia have been allowed to go scot-free”, many opined.
