Pathankot, January 30 The GOC said the exhibition was organised as part of “know your Army” campaign to generate awareness among the people of Gurdaspur, Kathua and Kangra districts and the surrounding areas of Pathankot. He said the exhibition, besides showcasing the technology and weapons, was also aimed at motivating the youth to join the Army. Modern weapons and equipment of the Army, including rocket launchers, artillery guns, battle tanks, missile launchers, anti-aircraft guns, radars, surveillance devices and various engineering vehicles, are on display. A large number of students from different schools participated in the exhibition. |

Girl murdered by telefriend, 2 held
Amritsar, January 30 The girl, identified as Mansi (20), a resident of Kot Baba Deep Singh here, was found strangulated to death near Sukhewala village on January 20. SP (Detective) Satpal Joshi, Amritsar (rural) police district, revealed the police immediately swung into action and circulated the photograph of the girl to all police stations. A relative of the victim identified her and informed her family, which later confirmed her identity. The police teams, led by SHO Arun Sharma of the Jandiala police, traced the mobile phone record and zeroed in on accused Karandeep Singh of Rup Nagar Colony, Gate Hakima, and Gurlal Singh of Daleke village (Tarn Taran), who were arrested near Vanchadi village. During interrogation, they admitted committing the crime. Karandeep used to work in a private transport company. Talking to the media, Joshi said Karandeep and Mansi had become telefriends and on the day of the incident, he along with Gurlal, picked her from Shaheed Baba Deep Singh Gurdwara and took her to a tubewell room situated in the fields at Hawalian village. However, an altercation erupted between the girl and the accused. The girl reported to have threatened the accused to disclose everything to her family. Panicked over this, they strangled the girl with the scarf and later threw her body near Sukhewala village, he added. A case has been registered under sections 302, 201 and 34, IPC, in this regard. Joshi said the medical examination report was awaited on whether the accused had raped the victim or not. |

Teenaged girl abducted, 2 booked
Tarn Taran, January 30 The girl was abducted from Dasuwal village, 45 km from here. A case under sections 363, 366, 506 and 34 of the IPC was registered at Valtoha police station last night. The accused have been identified as Manjinder Singh and Arjun Singh. The father of the abducted girl in his complaint to the police alleged that the accused abducted his daughter in a car on January 22. He alleged that Manjinder abducted his daughter to marry her. 2 nabbed with opium
Amritsar: The Amritsar (rural) police has arrested two persons and seized about 1 kg of opium in separate cases here today. According to information, Sarabjit Singh and Rinku Ram, both residents of Guru Nanak Pura, Beas, were nabbed with 500 and 490 gm of the contraband, respectively, on a tip-off. |

Nawanshahr, January 30 Giving details, vice-principal Rajesh Chandel told The Tribune that the camp was inaugurated by Vice-President Hamid Ansari. The riders of the academy had been showing feats of excellence in various events throughout the month-long procedure. On January 21, Defence Minister A.K. Anthony addressed the NCC cadets and motivated them to join the Army. On January 28, there was the Prime Minister’s rally and the trio had the opportunity to be part of this prestigious parade. And what could be more heartening than to have Sukhjinder Singh marking his prominence by leading the whole NCC contingent with the Tricolour in his hands. Dr Manmohan Singh, A.K. Anthony and the Chief Marshals of the Infantry, the Air Force and the Navy were among the eminent personalities at the parade. Sukhjinder Singh and Dawinderjeet Singh clinched gold medals, while Harminder Kaur won the silver medal in the show jumping event. “Earlier, the Kirpal Sagar Academy sent a team of riders to participate in a show at Muktsar. There, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal was all praises for the young riders,” said Chandel. |

While gurbani kirtans and langars were organised at some places, youngsters could be seen dancing to the tunes of religious songs at some others. Guru Ravidass Trust president Chaudhary Jagjit Singh said, “It is time for us to take to the path of Guru Ravidass’ vachanas. We should work hard and cooperate with one another.” |

College honours 250 students
Batala, January 30 Ajay Sareen, Principal, RR Bawa DAV College for Girls, read the annual report highlighting the achievements of the students in various fields. About 250 students were awarded degrees and many others were given prizes for their academic achievements in 2008-09. Tikshan Sood laid the foundation stone of the cosmetology block and announced a grant of Rs 2 lakh for its construction. Mohan Lal, adviser and secretgary of the DAV Managing Committee, New Delhi, was the guest of honour. |
300 awarded degrees at Apeejay convocation
Jalandhar, January 30 Dr Rajneesh Arora, Vice-Chancellor, Punjab Technical University, was the chief guest. Amandeep Kaur, Ishu Gakhar and Richa Arora of the MCA and Ravjot Kaur and Garima Baluja of the MBA were among the PG merit holders. Bhumika Vaidya of the BCA and Henry Juneja and Gurpreet Kaur Aulakh of the BBA, Hasmeet Kaur and Manmeen of the BSc were among the graduate students. Presenting the annual report, Dr Balram Dogra, institute Director, outlined the initiatives, achievements and collaborative research projects of the institute with national bodies like AICTE and CII.
