Gang of frauds busted, couple nabbed from Dehradun
Phagwara, February 6 He said the high-profile, fraud couple was declared proclaimed offender two years back. Identified as Varinderpal Narula and his wife Manu Narula, residents of Hargobind Nagar, Phagwara, the duo was wanted by the Phagwara Police in different cases of cheating and frauds since July 16, 2007. DSP Khakh said the couple was nabbed from Dehradun in Uttrakhand by a police party sent from Phagwara. He said the accused couple spent two-and-a-half years in Mumbai and was living in Dehradun since 2009. The DSP said the accused couple grabbed crores of rupees from dozens of Phagwara residents before disappearing from Phagwara in mysterious circumstances. Hoshiarpur: The body of migrant labourer Raj Kumar, alias Raju, son of Satpal of Budhatibal (Nepal), was found in the fields at Hakumatpur village today. According to police sources, Raj Kumar, along with his wife, had been working in the fields of Karnail Singh for the past 10 years. After taking his meal, Raj Kumar went to sleep. In the morning his wife found him missing and the main gate of the house opened. Later villagers informed her that the body of her husband was lying in the fields. Sources said that marks of

Nawanshahr: A Vigilance team led by DSP Amarjit Singh Matwani yesterday caught PSEB Junior Engineer Rajinder Kumar posted Aur in the district red-handed while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000 for temporarily shifting the cable to facilitate cutting of trees. Matwani said that Vishal Kumar of Karyam Road, Nawanshahr, in his complaint to the Vigilance Department, had stated that he had purchased some trees for Rs 48,300 from the Aur gram panchayat on December 14. As the electricity cable could cause hindrance in the process of cutting the trees, he requested the panchayat to get the cable shifted. The gram panchayat passed a resolution to this effect. The resolution was presented to the SDO, PSEB, Aur, for the necessary action. The SDO marked the resolution to JE Rajinder Singh who allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 for the job. Finally a deal for Rs 5,000 was settled. The Vigilance Department nabbed the accused and recovered the bribe amount from him, said the DSP. Hoshiarpur: A case of duping
Rs 5 lakh of Gurmail Singh son of Isher Singh of Bhulpur was duped of Rs 5 lakh by a so called travel agent Jatinder Singh of Chhehana of Amritsar district. The case was reported at the Tanda police station last evening. According to police sources Gurmail Singh alleged in his complaint that Jatinder Singh lured him for sending his son Dilbag Singh abroad, for which he took
Rs 5 lakh. He neither sent the boy abroad nor returned the money. |

One held with heroin
Nawanshahr: Banga DSP Jagdip Singh Sidhu said at a press meeting here that the Mukandpur police had arrested inter-state drug peddler Sunil Kumar of Rawaldi village in Haryana and seized 500 gm of heroine worth Rs 2.50 crore from his possession. The DSP said a police party led by SHO Inderjit Singh nabbed the accused at a naka at the Hakimpur bus stand. A case under section 21, 61 and 85, NDPS Act, has been registered against him. During interrogation, the accused disclosed that he was sent to deliver the heroine by Dinesh Kumar of Rajasthan and Surinder Chaudhary of Palwal (Haryana), the DSP said. — OC Two nabbed with drugs
Batala: The Narcotics Cell of the Civil Lines police in Batala police district has arrested two youths along with intoxicant drugs. SSP Dinesh Partap Singh told mediapersons here that the police had arrested Jatinder Kumar, a resident of Dharampura Colony, and Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Ram Nagar, Batala, with 410 gm of intoxicant drugs each.

Youth Cong burns Thackeray’s effigies
Gurdaspur, February 6 Led by Gurdaspur District Youth Congress President Karthik Wadhera, protesters started flowing from all over the district and later they assembled at the Civil Lines road where some high pitched slogans were raised against Bal Thackeray. Later, protesters gathered at Jahaz Chowk, where they burnt the effigies of the Shiv Sena supremo. Hoshiarpur: Activists of the District Youth Congress, led by president Amarpreet Singh Lali Mintu, demonstrated and burnt the effigy of the Shiv Sena in protest against opposing the recent visit of AICC General Secretary Rahul Gandhi to Mumbai, at the Shimla Pahari crossing here today. They raised slogans against Bal Thackeray, Udhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray and demanded registration of a sedition case against all of them. |

Staff meet CM, threaten strike
Jalandhar, February 6 The MC Engineers’ Association held a meeting at the zonal office of the corporation in Model Town. A press note issued by the association said, “All development works in the city will be withheld till ‘false cases’ against the employees and officials are not withdrawn. We condemn the ‘misbehaviour’ of Senior Deputy Mayor with MC secretary Ashok Sharma, his attempt to disrupt official work and ‘manhandling’ in the office of commissioner.” A representation of the employees led by Naresh Kumar met the Chief Minister Punjab Parkash Singh Badal at Rajasansi Airport in Amritsar and demanded action against Bhatia, failing which they said they would go on a strike from Monday. Meanwhile, a few Sikh organisations got together in support of Bhatia and held a press conference at Punjab Press Club this afternoon. Team of docs examines peacocks’ carcasses
Hoshiarpur, February 6 Constituted by the Deputy Director Animal Husbandry Department, Hoshiarpur, the team consisted of Dr. BK Sharma of Jandoli, Dr. Gurinder Singh of Mahilpur and Dr. Ranbir Singh of Rehbalpur. Acting on information received, a team of Wild Life Preservation Department (WLPD), led by Divisional Forest Officer Sewa Singh, recovered the carcasses of six peacocks buried in the private forest area of Bombeli village of Hoshiarpur district on Thursday. According to Dr. BK Sharma, the carcasses were decomposed badly. However, samples of internal organs and feeding material, recovered from their abdomens, were collected and were sent to the veterinary hospital, Jalandhar, for analysis to ascertain the real causes of their death. Meanwhile, Divisional Forest Officer (WLPD) Sewa Singh said teams of the department had started investigation in the area to know the causes of death and to nab the culprits. |

3 killed in mishap
Hoshiarpur, February 6 Batala: One person was killed on the spot, while two others were injured in a road accident near Sheikhupur village here on Friday. The scooter of Dharam Singh of Chatha Seera village who was
going along with his wife Harjit Kaur, was going on his scooter, met with an accident with a tractor-trailer laden with potatoes. The tractor-trailer overturned because of which tractor driver Gurpreet Singh died on the spot, while Harjit Kaur and a passerby were injured seriously. |
