15 killed, 21 hurt in road mishaps Hoshiarpur, October 18 In Hoshiarpur, five persons, including a woman, were killed and 20 others were wounded in three separate road accidents in the district since yesterday. According to the police sources, three persons, identified as Sohan Singh, Gurbax Kaur, and Kashmir Singh, all of Darapur Jambowal, died on the spot while 20 other passengers were wounded when a speedy minibus (PB 08N 0468) in which they were travelling overturned at Jalalpur near Tanda on Jalandhar-Pathankot national highway yesterday. All injured were admitted in Civil Hospital, Tanda. Hoshiarpur Civil Surgeon Dr S.K. Gupta said after the injured were discharged after getting first aid. The Tanda police has booked minibus driver Harbhajan Singh under relevant sections of the IPC. In another accident pedestrian Nirmal Kumar of Chagran, died on the spot when a speedy motorcycle (PB 07B 8871) hit him near the village last evening. The Sadar police has registered a case against motorcyclist Kulwinder Singh of Mal Mazara. Migrant labourer Dhan Kumar, worker of ABC Paper Mill, Saila Khurd, was crushed to death by some unknown vehicle. Phagwara: One married woman, identified as Sushma, died of critical burn injuries, which she sustained after her clothes caught fire from the stove at her house in Basant Nagar in Phagwara yesterday. She was admitted to the Civil Hospital but succumbed to her injuries today. In another incident, migrant labourer named Parkash died after reportedly consuming some poisonous substance in the quarter near the fields of Surjit Singh in nearby Bahani village yesterday. He was admitted to local civil hospital but was declared brought dead by the doctors. Hans Raj of nearby Narur village was killed on the spot when he was hit by a speeding vehicle near the village last night. Another unknown person was killed in a road accident in Phagwara today. Davinder Singh of Hussanpura was run over by a train near Khajurala today. Kewal Ram of nearby Chachoki village was killed on the spot when a speeding bus (number PB-10BJ-8489) hit his cycle near the Civil Hospital chowk on national highway last night. The police has arrested the bus driver and impounded the bus. The body of the deceased was handed over to his family members after the postmortem today. Jalandhar: Newly married Madhu Bala (19) was killed when the scooter she was riding in collided head-on with a truck near Wadala Chowk on Nakodar road on Divali on Saturday. Her husband Harish Chander of Bhargo Camp was driving the scooter. He sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. The police registered a case against the driver of the truck. In yet another incident, an unknown woman was crushed to death under a train at rail track near Guru Nanak Pura railway crossing. It could not be known whether it was an accident or she committed suicide. Her body has been sent to the Civil Hospital for postmortem. Nawanshahr: Sunil Kumar of Bhaura village and Harvinder Singh of Mahil Gehilan village were killed on the spot and Surinder Kumar of Bhaura and Sukhvir of Garhshanker were injured, when their scooter was reportedly rammed into a village entrance gate at Surapur at about 8.30 pm on Saturday. |

20 booked for hooliganism Tarn Taran, October 18 A case under sections 307, 452, 506, 427, 148 and 149 of the IPC has been registered against the attackers, said SSP Sukhdev Singh Brar. According to the sources, the gang members, armed with swords, datars, sticks and other weapons, forcibly entered three houses of the locality and beat up the residents and ransacked the houses. Ninder Kumar, Jagwant Singh, Avtar Singh, Bagga, Patta, Manga Deepa are seven accused who have been identified. The remaining are yet to be identified. The sources said the members are of a criminal gang and have formed their group for creating terror among their rivals. This incident too is said to be a fight among two rival groups of the area. The gang members attacked the houses at about 8 pm and left at around 11 pm. The house of one Gagandeep Kali, Baljit Singh and Pinder Singh were the target in which one Gurnaib Singh Naiba was seriously injured, who was admitted to the local Civil Hospital. SHO Jaspal Singh said despite conducting raids at the hideouts of the accused, nobody could be arrested so far. |

3 factories, shop, tent house gutted Jalandhar, October 18 According to Fire Brigade sources, major fire broke out at a rubber factory in Manjit Nagar area falling under Basti Sheikh while a plywood factory in Gadaipur also caught fire during Divali festival. Another major fire incident was reported at Ghai Furnitures situated on Nakodar Road. Talking to The Tribune, a fire brigade official said all the three incidents took place after 9 pm and it took more than hour to extinguish the fire. “We reached the spot well on time and managed to douse off the flames. And luckily no loss of life was reported from the three major fire incidents”, he added. However, doctors at the civil hospital said that a few minor burn case patients who came to the hospital were attended upon and sent home. “We did not receive any major burn case on Divali,” said Dr. Gurmeet at the Emergency Ward. Meanwhile, defying the orders of the district administration people kept on bursting crackers till late in the night leading to noise pollution in the city. Especially the residential areas adjoining the hospitals were a cause of big problem to the patients as well as the senior citizens. Nawanshahr: A grocery shop situated at Kirpa Gate here was gutted in fire on Divali night. Shop owner Kashmiri Lal said he had closed the shop at about 9.30 pm on Saturday and about 3 am, he was informed by the neighbours about the fire. When he reached the site, he found his shop gutted in fire. While suspecting a foul play by some miscreants, he said the fire had caused a loss of about Rs 2 lakh. Pathankot: Goods worth several lakhs of rupees were reduced to ashes in a devastating fire, which broke out in a tent house in Patel Chowk here on Divali night following a short circuit. According to SP (city) Bhupinderjit Singh Virk the fire broke at the tent shop about 2 am and fire tenders controlled the flames in four hours. No loss of life was reported. |

Minor scuffle leads to murder Nawanshahr, October 18 Both the brothers were working at a cloth shop at Phagwara. As per the available information, they were returning from Phagwara on their motorcycle at about 8.30 pm on Saturday, when the group attacked them. The brothers were seriously injured and Inderjit Singh, died on the way to Civil Hospital, Banga. Injured Manjinder Singh said about two and half months ago, a petty dispute had occurred between them and the accused, which was resolved by The police has registered a case under section 302 of the IPC at Behram police station against Pardeep Singh and Manjinder Singh. The other persons could also be included in the case after investigation, said Jagjit Singh Gill, SP (HQ), adding that the police has also sent the “look out circular” ( LOC) to the airports to thwart the any fleeing attempt by the accused. New hospital announced on Vishwakarma Day Phagwara, October 18 Punjab Technical Education Minister Swarna Ram also announced Rs 2 lakh to the sabha for the new hospital from his discretionary funds. Bhag Singh announced Rs 3 lakh for the noble cause. In total Rs 15 lakh was collected from various donors for the construction of a new hospital. Congress MP Smt Santosh Chaudhary also paid obeisance to Lord Vishwakarma at the function. Batala: Several thousand industrial workers worshiped their instruments on Vishwkarma Day in industrial town of Batala today. Sweets were distributed on the occasion. Hoshiarpur: Vishwakarma Day was celebrated with great enthusiasm here today. Functions in various factories and at local Shakti temple were held. Havan were performed at Shakti temple and langar (community kitchen) was served on the occasion. Langars were also served before many of the industries. Pathankot: A function was held at the Vishwakarma Temple here today where thousand of people offered prayers to Lord Vishwakarma. Punjab Transport Minister Master Mohan Lal performed a special pooja. Sankirtan was also performed and langar was served. He announced a grant of Rs.1 lakh to the local Vishwakarma Sabha for its welfare schemes. |

Neighbouring colonies engage in gate war Batala, October 18 The members of Urban Estate Welfare Association (UEWA) have accused Greater Kailash residents of harassing them on some or the other pretext. Association president Kashmr Singh Boparai along with secretary Harbans Singh Sidhu alleged residents of the newly developed Greater Kailash colony harass them unnecessarily. The Urban Estate Welfare Association used the funds provided by Ambika Khanna, Municipal Council President, Batala, to construct a gate near Gurudwara Urban Estate to prohibit the heavy commercial vehicles like Tractor trollies and big trucks from entering in order for the safety of residents, especially children and aged. Boparai said as their Colony was PUDA approved colony, no regular road or way can be used for the public carriers like buses, trucks and tractor trollies for business purposes. He further alleged that on Thursday about 60 persons uprooted the gate and took it with them. Even after lodging a written complaint, the police did not take any action. He said the people who did this job all belong to adjoining Greater Kailash colony and accused Massa Singh and Gurinder Singh Riar (a PSEB employee) and Satnam Singh were behind the move. Greater Kailash colony residents complained that gate poses problems as trucks or school buses aren’t allowed to enter the colony. Many prominent persons of Batala who reside at Urban Estate colony included Jagdish Sawhney, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, MC President Ambika Khanna and Balbir Singh Bath, MLA, Srihargobindpur Constituency. |
Ex-GMC Principal passes away Amritsar, October 18 The Punjab State Medical and Dental Teachers Association today condoled the death of one of the eldest faculty of prestigious GMC. Dr Singh remained as professor and HoD of Anesthesia from 1957 to 1978. He was instrumental in setting up the department, which was under the Department of Surgery at that time. He was the editor of Indian Journal of Anesthesia for a couple of decades and Vice-President of World Federation of Anesthesiology. He published several papers in reputed peer reviewed journals and was awarded FFARCS without ever having worked in the UK. He also served as the visiting professor of anesthesiology at the University of Cincinnati, College of Medicine, for three years. He was also a veteran of World War II. |

Phagwara, October 18 Though a series of raids were conducted in last few days to check adulteration of sweets and milk products, no team of the Health Department in Phagwara carried out similar exercise on the day of Divali. Shopkeepers in Phagwara put up huge stalls violating laws and causing problems for the traffic. Several Nagar Council employees were seen collecting money under the table from the shopkeepers for raising encroachments.
