57.8 quintals of adulterated sweets seized
Jalandhar, October 12 After the seizure, the department sealed the sweets in a room of the house from where the owner of R.S. Patisa and Petha House was running the trade. The department has also taken a security bond of about Rs 4 lakh from the shop owner. Acting on a tip-off, a team of the Health Department raided the house and found that Satnam Singh was selling adulterated khoya, burfi, milk cake, patisa, petha and other eatables. He was procuring these items from Chandigarh, Moga and Ludhiana and selling them here by pasting labels of his company on the boxes, revealed District Health Officer (DHO) Dr Roop Lal. The DHO said the owner was using substandard refined oil instead of khoya and synthetic colours in the sweets. Samples of the sweets seized had been sent to the Chandigarh-based laboratory of the Punjab Health Department for ascertaining their purity. Talking to The Tribune, Civil Surgeon Dr S.S. Walia claimed that strict action would be taken against the shopkeepers found guilty of selling adulterated and substandard dairy products during the festival season. Kapurthala:The Health Department raided a sweet shop located at Bholath and seized 7.80 quintals of spurious dairy products. A team of the district health officials, led by Food Inspector Sandeep Singh, raided a sweet shop owned by Lekh Raj, located on the Kapurthala-Kartarpur road, and seized eatables, including khoya (70 kg), rasgulla (670 kg) milk cake (20 kg), dry powder (19 kg) and 50 tins of spurious ghee. The Health Department has also collected samples of suspected rasgulas from Ahuja Sweets, a famous sweet shop in Kapurthala. The samples of seized items have been sent to Chandigarh for testing. |

Patwaris stage dharna against MLA
Tarn Taran, October 12 Sukhpreet Singh, president of the tehsil unit of the union, presided over the dharna, and other leaders of the union addressed the gathering. The leaders alleged that their colleague Ajaib Singh was suspended on the instructions of MLA Manjit Singh, who represented Khadur Sahib Vidhan Sabha constituency. The union demanded for the early reinstatement of their suspended colleague Ajaib Singh and warned that in case their demand was not fulfilled, the union would be forced to intensify its agitation. Manjit Singh, when contacted said the patwari misbehaved with him when he requested him for the verification of the antecedents of a youth who died in a drowning incident in the Beas last year and the district administration had released a grant of Rs 1 lakh for the victim’s family. The MLA said he would prove that the patwari misbehaved with him in the inquiry regarding his suspension. |

Residents protest sewerage blockage
Nawanshahr, October 12 They had been facing a lot of inconvenience due to stinking sewerage for the past more than a month, but all their complaints had virtually been falling on deaf ears, rued the residents, adding that the municipal officials had just been making temporary arrangements for clearing the sewerage. A few days ago, the sewage was disposed of into vacant plots in the locality, thereby aggravating their miseries. Municipal councillor Param Singh Khalsa lamented that though he had brought the problem to the notice of the authorities concerned several times, nothing concrete had been done to clear the sewerage. He said he would take a deputation of the residents to the Deputy Commissioner in this connection. Municipal engineer Sat Pal Sharma said the efforts to remove the blockage were made but in vain. Now the sewerage line would be punctured and a new manhole constructed to ensure disposal of sewage. — OC |

Helpage seeks state policy for the aged
Amritsar, October 12 Davinder Singh Aujla, local project officer of Helpage India, at a function organised to observe International Elderly Day, said the law on providing security to aged persons should be implemented in letter and spirit. Quoting some data, he said the population of aged persons in India was pegged at 8.2 crore, of which about 6.6 crore lived below the poverty line, while two crore were widows and did not have any source of livelihood. He said Helpage India had adopted about 17,000 aged persons under its “adopt a granny” programme. Aujla said Helpage had been running 2,800 projects,including old-ge homes, day-care centres, rehabilitation centres and mobile medicare units. He said in India there we about 52 mobile medicare units. The unit visited various rural areas of the district, providing free treatment and medicines to the needy aged persons. Meanwhile, the unit organised a medical camp in the Putlighar area here in which about 175 aged persons were examined. |

Mystery shrouds death of 2 Army men
Gurdaspur, October 12 The Army men were identified as Sukhpreet Singh and Nirmal Singh. Information gathered by The Tribune revealed that Sukhpreet Singh and Nirmal Singh, along with one of their friends, had gone to meet their another friend living in Bhagthana village on a motorcycle. They left the place of their friend late last evening. While they were coming back to their native place from Bhagthana, they reportedly met with an accident on the Kalanaur-Agwan road near a fish pond and their bodies were found lying near that place. However, the kin of deceased alleged foul play in their death. The police was investigating the matter.

Jalandhar, October 12 The final match was played between MGN Public School, Jalandhar, and Kundan Vidya Mandir, Ludhiana. The team of MGN Public School won the match by 8 runs. Shubik was declared Man of Match and the Man of Tournament trophy was given to Mandeep of MGN Public School. Office-bearers of the state and district cricket associations were present on the occasion.
