The CCTV cameras once again proved helpful for the district police in solving a major theft of valuables during a ring ceremony at Hotel Country Inn.

Thieves had decamped with cash and a diamond necklace worth lakhs of rupees from the ceremony on September 29.

Acting on a complaint of Parminder Singh, a resident of the Basti Sheikh locality that certain unscrupulous persons had taken away a diamond necklace and cash from the hotel. He also complained that the thieves had taken away certain “shagun envelopes” from the site.

Taking note of the complaint, the police laid a trap, besides watching the footage of CCTV cameras installed in the hotel.

The police found interesting clues that two children, dressed as domestic helps, had mingled with party members. The police also found the children carrying certain goods and escaping from the ceremony.

A hunt was launched to nab the suspect. The police succeeded in nabbing a migrant woman hailing from the bus stand after finding certain “shagun envelops” from her bag.

She also claimed that the siblings left for Madhya Pradesh with the necklace.

The police has also recovered certain envelopes containing the “shagun” money worth Rs 5,600 from her. A police party has been sent to nab the suspects in Madhya Pradesh, the SHO added.

Amritsar, October 9
The tension prevailing in Guru Nanak Dev University’s regional campus at Gurdaspur is seemed to be resolved as Vice-Chancellor Dr Ajaib Singh Brar has accepted the demands of students to start routine classes from October 12.

The decision was taken after the students assured the university authorities to maintain peace and law and order on the campus. The VC then ordered revocation of the suspension of the students of the Law Department of the regional campus who were suspended for their alleged misconduct and derogatory remarks against their teachers.

The authorities had locked campus on October 1 after students failed to turn up for negotiations in spite of repeated requests by the teachers appointed for resolving the issue. The students had gone on fast when the authorities locked the mess and the hostel, virtually leaving all the students, including foreigners, on the road. They were on strike against lack of basic facilities, including drinking water coolers. However, the VC had pointed out that all their genuine demands were accepted by the university. He had warned students of strict action for creating indiscipline on the campus.
