Price rise dampens poll spirit
Hoshiarpur, April 24 A retired principal of Government College, Pojewal, Manorma Mahindra, said that in the past, it was a common practice of the Central and state governments to control the prices of essential commodities for providing relief to the people to get votes in favour of the ruling parties. But this time, it was strange that neither the government had taken any effective steps to stabilise the prices nor any of the political party had touched this issue during elections. She apprehended that the skyrocketing prices would cause to decline the polling percentage. Karyana merchant Nirmal Kumar Saini said the management of Verka dairy had recently enhanced the prices of ghee from Rs 198 to Rs 205 per litre. Similarly, the prices of sugar had got up from Rs 24 to Rs 29 per kg, vegetable ghee from Rs 50 to Rs 60 per litre, mustard and other oils from Rs 55 to Rs 75 per kg, turmeric from Rs 60 to Rs 100 per kg. The people have to shell out 20 per cent more on the purchase of pulses and 40 per cent on spices. The wheat flour was being sold at Rs 15 per kg. The local dairy owners and halwais had also increased the prices of milk from Rs 21 to Rs 22.50 per litre and of curd from Rs 30 to Rs 34 per kg. The rates of sweets made of milk had also been increased accordingly. Harish Saini, a social activist, said the government officials concerned had turned a blind eye to control the price hike and leaders of the ruling parties were busy in their election campaign. The rising prices of essential commodities are going to emerge as the major issue in these elections, apprehended Saini.Under these conditions how could poor men participate in the election campaign and caste their votes, he questioned. |
