Christians, Dalits asked not to vote for BJP
Amritsar, April 23 Daniel B. Das, co-ordinator, SEDP, claimed that writ of the SEDP ran not only on Christians but also the Dalits. Das claimed that the Christian community had about one lakh electorate in the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency with a majority of them concentrating in the Ajnala assembly constituency. A subdivision, Ajnala has about 30,000 Christian voters followed by Attari and Rajasansi with 10 per cent each, he said. He said they were asking community electorate to put forth five demands to the Lok Sabha candidates - to hold a quarterly meeting to listen to their grievances, to implement Panchayati Raj Institutions Act in totality while seeking panchayats to be made accountable and transparent. The manch is in favour of removing lacunae in implementing scheme of giving five-marla land for raising houses and two marlas for garbage disposal to landless farmers, ensure setting up of toilets and provision for water supply at each Dalit house. He sought extending benefits of reservation to the Christians on the line of Dalits. Das called upon the minorities in general and Christians and Dalits in particular not to cast votes in favour of the BJP. He claimed that doublespeak of the BJP was visible during the anti-Christian riots in Orissa. He alleged that the saffron party and its offshoots, Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), let loose terror on Christians while BJP leaders based at Delhi were issuing misleading statements. He said the BJP honoured alleged perpetrators of riots against the Christian community in Orissa, Manoj Pradhan and Ashok Sahu, with Lok Sabha ticket. He said all the minorities in India must be united to stand against any high-handedness by the majority community. |

Agriculturists unhappy with pay commission report
Hoshiarpur, April 23 Strongly criticising the pay commission’s recommendation, Dr Gurkanwal Singh, convener, Agriculture Technocrats Action Committee (AGTAC), Dr Chaman Lal Vashisht, general secretary, AGTAC, and Dr Avtar Singh, president, Plant Doctors Services Association, Punjab, said it had once again brought forth the deep-rooted anti-agriculture bias of the decision makers. The leaders emphasised that injustice with agriculture/horticulture services had been done at a time when national quality food security issues and increasing incidents of suicide of the Punjab farmer (due to declining profits) had necessitated the strengthening of agriculture research and extension. The leaders said the shocks of global recession could be absorbed by making agriculture in Punjab profitable which was only possible if justice was done to the agriculture services, which would attract talent to boost the economy of
the state. The leaders issued a strong note to the government not to accept the recommendations for the agricultural sector, and to provide justice to the farmers by placing the agriculture and horticulture services at a better position than the veterinarians and other technocrats, on the basis of their increased social importance, failing which agricultural technocrats would be compelled to launch a protest. |
