"In wake of the government assurance, we have called off the strike and the transport services have been resumed," he said.

Haridwar, February 21
Services of the state roadways buses remained suspended for the second consecutive day, here today. The employees held a protest at the roadways office and tried to disrupt buses of other states from plying in the city. At the Singh Dwar Chowk, the employees pelted stones at three buses of the Uttar Pradesh roadways while they were entering the Rishikul grounds.

In addition to the inconvenience caused to passengers the state exchequer is also bearing the brunt of the strike. According to the ARM, HR Dabral, the two-day strike has resulted in a loss of almost Rs 10 lakh.

Notably, there are 70 buses that operate from Haridwar and as many as 600 buses operate per day from the bus depot.

With the agitators turning violent, the police increased security at the Rishikul GMVN bus stop and all the taxi stands, which witnessed a heavy rush due to the strike. There has also been a significant increase in the number of passengers commuting through trains. Haridwar station superintendent R Goswami said the strike has put additional burden on the railways.

Earlier in the day, chief of Uttarakhand Kranti Manch JP Pandey had appealed to the administration to take steps to check the violence. “It's the common man who suffers due to such strikes. Politicians and bureaucrats don't need buses to travel, the employees should understand this,” said Pandey.

At last, MC sub-panel poll on March 2

Haridwar, February 21
The elections of the sub-committees of the Haridwar municipal corporation, which have been cancelled thrice, will be held on March 2. According to the notification regarding the election procedure issued by the Haridwar MC, the last date for withdrawing nomination is February 24.

In the 10-month tenure of the municipal committee under chairman Kamal Johra, the elections of sub-committee haven’t been held. Politics among BJP members, protest by the Opposition and lack of coordination among ward members had resulted in ruckus and cancellation of elections. This has resulted in the delay of developmental works in the city.

The general board meeting of the municipality has been only held twice which according to norms should be held at least once in three months.

Chairman Kamal Johra said that he would make an effort to foster understanding among ward members so that the elections could be held for the betterment of the people and development works in the city.

With the declaration of the sub-panel elections for the fourth time, the Opposition has termed it as their victory. They claimed that the ruling party had admitted foul play last time when they had violated election rules.

In this municipal committee, the Congress, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samajwadi Party have joined hands and this has put the ruling BJP on the tenter hooks.

“We had supported the ruling party. But it was due to BJP’s factionalism or use of illegal means to secure sub-committees posts by the BJP that the elections were cancelled,” said Samajwadi Party’s Dr Premprakash Sathlewal, Leader of Opposition, while addressing mediapersons.

In this regard, all Opposition members, irrespective of political party, had signed a letter and gave it to DM Haridwar Shailesh Bhagoli.

When sub-panel elections were cancelled last time, the Opposition members had complained to the Garhwal Comissioner and District Magistrate Shailesh Bagholi and pleaded for an inquiry into the matter.

While replying to the Opposition’s stand, chairman Kamal Johra had filed an case against Opposition members seeking their termination but later backed out.

Dehradun, February 21
Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) today named its general secretary Raj Kumar Saini as the party candidate for Haridwar Lok Sabha seat. The announcement comes close on the heels of the Dal’s coalition partner, BJP, naming education minister Madan Kaushik as their candidate for Haridwar.

After the meeting of its executive committee at Jaspur in Udham Singh Nagar, UKD spokesman Harish Pathak said the party has decided to contest for all five seats in the state. The names of candidates for remaining four seats would be taken in three to four days, he said.

With this decision, the situation has taken an interesting turn, as both coalition partners will be pitted against each other. Of the three UKD legislators, Diwakar Bhatt of Dev Prayag constituency is the cabinet minister.

He has since declined to contest for any seat. Sources said the party leadership is under tremendous pressure to pull out from the government to contest election.

Although Pathak was evasive when asked whether the party leadership had asked him to step down, he said he could leave the government if the need arose.

State not utilising Central funds, alleges Mahila Congress chief
Neena Sharma

Tribune News Service

Dehradun, February 21
The All-India Mahila Congress chief Dr Prabha Thakur today charged the BJP government in Uttarakhand of failing to utilise development funds earmarked under the National Rural Employment Generation (NREG) Programme and other Central government funded programmes.

The Congress leader was speaking on the sidelines of the Mahila Congress Sammelan here.

She said that the UPA government at the Centre has allocated funds to all states equally but the BJP government has been spreading rumours that there was a scarcity of funds.

“The fund allocation made by the Central government has been very transparent and the accusations made by the BJP are baseless. In fact, the BJP state government deliberately did not take up the Centre’s development schemes, which were for the poor, fearing that it would prove counterproductive in the Lok Sabha elections,” said Prabha Thakur.

She also charged the Uttarakhand government of misusing public funds. “The BJP has launched an advertisement campaign glorifying its achievements not realising that the public funds are being misused,” said Dr Prabha Thakur.

The Mahila Congress Chief said that the Congress in the state will better its performance in the forthcoming elections. “I have already sounded the election bugle and I am optimistic that women will play a decisive role in the elections.”

On the question of fielding women candidates for the five Lok Sabha seats from the state, Prabha Thakur said, “If the names of competent women come up for selection, we will give due consideration to them. As of now, I cannot predict how things shape up at the time of selection of candidates.”

Rejecting that there was any factionalism in the Mahila Congress, she said that the party has space for everyone but not at the cost of party discipline. “However at the time of elections, these things fade in the background. The party is already in election gear,” Thakur said.

Dehradun, February 21
The registration of a case against Munna Singh Chauhan, BJP MLA from Vikasnagar, has given ammunition to the opposition Congress to counter the BJP.

The Congress has been facing flak for its leader Dr Harak Singh Rawat having allegedly threatened the passport officer and for his supporters having vandalised the passport office earlier this week.

When contacted, Chauhan claimed that he had pulled up the assistant engineer but did not assault or abuse him.

Chauhan said he had been getting regular complaints pertaining to an irrigation project near Telwala. “Despite my repeated requests to Vijendra to look into the complaint, he paid no heed.”
