LS Poll
Dehradun, February 15 It would be for the third time in the past two years that she would be opposing the candidate of the party of her husband. It was rumoured that she would soon be joining BSP to contest for Tehri seat, much to the discomfort of BJP think-tank that has already declared ace-shooter Jaspal Rana as their candidate for the seat. Since both Madhu Chauhan and Jaspal Rana belong to Jaunsar area of Chakrata region, they would be dividing the votes of the region to the disadvantage of the latter. This unique case of “Pati, Patni and the Politics” started during the assembly polls in 2007. Munna Singh Chauhan, a senior BJP leader from Chakrata region of Dehradun district, who himself was BJP candidate from Vikasnagar assembly segment, wanted his wife Madhu Chauhan, who had quit her government job to enter politics, to contest from the adjoining Chakrata segment. However, BJP leadership rejected this. Undeterred, Madhu Chauhan contested as an independent and pushed the official BJP candidate to the third spot, making it easy for the Congress candidate to romp home to victory. The state BJP leaders found it unacceptable and tried to pressurise Munna Singh to persuade his wife to withdraw from the contest, but to no avail. However, he declared that he would not go in for canvassing in support of his wife and would appeal to voters of Chakrata to support the official BJP candidate. Munna Singh had argued that since his wife was an individual entity she could not be forced to withdraw. Madhu Chauhan contested, lost, but Munna Singh made it to the assembly. However, despite being senior and competent he could not make it to the council of ministers of Khanduri government. Later in October, 2008, during panchayat elections Madhu Chauhan contested against the official BJP candidate for the post of Dehradun zila panchayat president and winning it, much to the chagrin of ruling BJP who spared no efforts to win the prestigious post. As the scene shifted to 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Munna Singh Chauhan emerged as one of the strongest contender for the BJP ticket for the Tehri seat. But BJP leaders denied him the same and Jaspal Rana, who is the brother of the daughter-in-law of BJP president Rajnath Singh, was chosen as the candidate. Vijay Bahuguna of Congress holds the Tehri Lok Sabha seat at present. Now, Madhu Chauhan as a BSP candidate would also pose problems for the Congress. There was even talk of Munna Singh quitting BJP, but he has denied the same. However, Munna Singh has neither confirmed nor denied the speculations about his wife joining BSP. “She is a mature politician capable of taking her own decisions,”
he said. |

He also was quite critical of the slum development programme of the corporation accusing the BJP mayor of working on selected slums. Computers go missing from ‘madrassas’
Roorkee, February 15 The computer programme, started under the aegis of the 'Muslim Education Mission' (MEM) during the previous ND Tewari regime to modernise ‘madarssas’ and bring these on par with mainstream schools by adequately providing computers, is now showing signs of coming to a grinding halt. The fact was stated by the Uttarakhand Minority Commission vice-president Amir Ahmed Qadri after making a surprise visit of all government-approved ‘madrassas’ of the region two days ago. Qadri said, “During inspection, I found around 60 to 70 computers missing on the pretext of repair from several madrassas. On inquiry, I came to know that these computers went missing immediately after installation." Besides, many computers were found nonfunctional at several madrassas resulting in the defeat of the purpose of the mission, added Qadri. Around 185 madrassas are being run in the state to provide religious and vocational education to the Muslim students. "Under the MEM, computers were provided only to 25 government approved madrassas. Each madrassa was given four to five computers according to its strength of students," said Qadri. "Muslims are facing a lot of problems as most of us are not well-educated. Providing computer education was a progressive step to strengthen the base of our children but due to vested interests of some 'maulvis' and leaders, the mission is being hampered", said Qadri. Qadri, who was accompanied by Aleem Siddiqui, member of the state minority cell of the BJP, during his visit to madrassas of Laksar, Manglore, Landaura, Rampur, Padli, Teliwala, expressed happiness over the increase in number of Muslim girls in educational institutes. "At every madrassa, I found almost an equal number of girls and boys. This is very positive sign," said Qadri. Qadri underlined that he would submit his report to the Chief Minister at the end of February. |
