Gas agencies booked for LPG misuse
Dehradun, February 7 The development comes in the wake of yesterday’s district-wide raids in which 185 cylinders were seized from hotels and shops using them for commercial purpose. So far, any action was limited to consumers found guilty of commercial use of domestic LPG cylinders and gas agencies generally used to go scot-free. However, on the instructions of the District Magistrate Amit Singh Negi, the district food and civil supplies officer TN Upadhaya today lodged a police complaint against Shiva Gas Agency, Shastri Nagar, and Arvind Gas Agency, Race Course. The owners of both agencies, having dealership of Indian Oil Corporation and Bharat Petroleum, respectively, were booked on the basis of the statement of owner of Prince Honey restaurant, Nehru Colony. Eight cylinders seized from the restaurant were supplied by these agencies. Besides, the department has also recommended police action against of owners of Akashdeep hotel, Tyagi Road, Garhwali Sweets, Jogiwala of Dehradun city and a prominent sweets shop in Vikas Nagar. “Since the statements of their owners could not be recorded, as they were not present on the spot, we have lodged complaints against them in the respective police stations. The agencies which supplied cylinders meant for domestic use will be identified after the investigation,” said Upadhaya. During the raids 118 cylinders were seized from the city, 41 from Vikas Nagar and 26 from
Rishikesh. Six cylinders were recovered from two dairies in Karanpur and Jakhan areas. Upadhaya said the matter has also been brought to the notice of the petroleum companies concerned for action against the guilty agencies. Notably, the administration has limited powers to act against gas agencies. At best, it can lodge police complaints. The companies, however, terminate dealerships in case any agency is found guilty on account of misuse of domestic LPG for a third time. There is a provision of slapping a fine of Rs 25,000 and Rs 50,000 for the first and second time, respectively. The raids were conducted after several complaints regarding scarcity of cooking gas, allegedly on account of black-marketeering, being reported from all parts of the district due to which consumers were facing a hard time. The team comprised the additional district magistrate, sub-divisional magistrates and the district food and civil supplies officer. During the raids, owners of commercial establishments reportedly closed their shutters on Haridwar Road, Prince Chowk and Clock Tower areas. |

Dry spell worrying, says Congress
Dehradun, February 7 While Congress MLA Dinesh Aggarwal yesterday accused the government of misusing the official machinery for political interests, today the Congress leaders slammed the government for overlooking the drought-like conditions prevailing in the state. Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) media incharge Suryakant Dhasmana said against an average rainfall of 50 mm in January, the Garhwal region recorded 5.2 mm rainfall whereas Kumaon received less than 4 mm rainfall. He said there had hardly been any snow in the hilly areas this year. “Because of less rain and snow, wheat and potato yields have been severely affected. The meagre rainfall has also hit apple cultivation in Uttarkashi and Chamoli districts,” said Dhasmana. Dhasmana said due to the dry spell there would be severe problem in power generation and the state would have to grapple with water scarcity during summer. Accusing the state government of not taking stock of the situation, Dhasmana said a survey should be conducted at the tehsil level and the report sent to the Union government for immediate action. “Any further delay in conducting a survey would prove detrimental for the state. Once the election process gets underway, the Central government would not be able to release any grant,” he said. While giving an ultimatum to the government to take necessary steps to deal with the situation, Dhasmana announced that on February 12 a Congress delegation, led by UPCC chief Yashpal Arya, would meet Governor BL Joshi in this regard. The party would also resort to demonstrations in case state government fails to initiate corrective measures, he added. |

Landslide alert in Pitthoragarh
Dehradun, February 7 Massive landslides had hit the road from Dharchula to Mangti at Tawaghat on the bank of the Kali on Friday. A large portion of the road was blocked. Six families living in the nearby area were evacuated by the administration. Since the debris from the landslides was falling in the fast flowing Kali, which forms the border between India and Nepal in the district, there was a danger of blockade of the river. However, district and police officials maintain that despite debris from landslides settling in the river bed, there was little chance of a lake formation. They maintain that only earth has been falling in the river and no rocks. The district administration has alerted people living on the banks in Jauljibi and Dharchula towns. They have been asked to vacate their premises. According to the administration, there was no danger to the 280 MW Dauliganga project downstream of the Kali. |
