Youth stabbed to death by uncle over business rivalry
New Delhi, December 19 Ajay bled to death and was declared brought dead when taken to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital. The accused has absconded while a police team has launched a manhunt to nab Sohan Lal. He is the brother-in-law of Ajay’s uncle. Ajay was to get married on February 14, 2009. According to the police, Sohan Lal ran a rehri of fried meat items in H Block Market of Jehangirpuri and did a brisk business. However, his business saw a dip lately when some months back Ajay too started selling them same food items close to Sohan Lal’s rehri. This bothered Sohan Lal and he asked him to shift his rehri to some other place. According to Ajay’s father the duo had often fought about this in the past and Sohan Lal had warned him of dire consequences. Last night, Sohan Lal did not put his rehri as usual and reached the marked around 10.30 to kill Ajay. He carried a heavy meat cutting knife with him and attacked Ajay after abusing him. The bleeding Ajay was taken to hospital by the PCR van after somebody informed them about the incident. However, precious time was lost in this and he had died before they reached hospital. Ajay was to get married on Valentine’s Day next year and was busy preparing for the occasion. “He was very happy and looking forward to the day. We had booked the banquet hall and band for the marriage well in advance and Ajay was to get his clothes stitched in a couple of days. But all is lost now,” said Ajay’s father. A case of murder has been lodged in Jehangirpuri police station. |

MCD staff take the yoga path to fitness
New Delhi, December 19 Municipal employees have started coming for their day’s work a little early in the morning to practice yoga. The municipal commissioner said he would start taking the sessions soon. “The act is appreciable as it promotes interaction among employees and creates a friendly atmosphere within the organisation,” said Mehra. The initiative has been taken by municipal secretary Meira Akolia, along with her staff members. “Government servants are generally termed as slow and lethargic. They were blamed for improper working because of their dull attitude. Therefore, we decided to start some recreational activity which would help us stay fit and healthy. As everybody know nothing can be more suitable for health than yoga,” said Meira. “The other benefit is that employees have become punctual. Earlier, they used to come after 10 am. Now they are coming at eight to attend the exercises,” she said. The exercise is done in the Azad Park located in front of the Town Hall at Chandni Chowk. The initiative has been aimed to follow the corporate culture where they have gymnasiums for their employees. “The idea is to involve more employees and make it a success because every organisation wants it employees to look fit and healthy,” said an employee who comes for yoga. “Initially, we were a group of few people but later, other employees also joined us which is very motivating,” he said. The employees also hold discussions on a particular social issue to increase interaction and good communication skills. |
Schools gear up to hike fees by 50%
New Delhi, December 19 The schools are awaiting the decision of a committee appointed by the Delhi government on fixing school fee. The committee, reportedly, had ignored the matter with the fear of losing votes in the recently concluded assembly election. Though private schools have been calling for fee hike since September this year, the Congress-led city government had postponed the matter to avoid popular backlash in the run to the assembly election. Now that the Sheila Dikshit government is back to power, the school authorities expect the committee to start working on their demands. Many schools have already issued notices to parents indicating the probable fee hike that would likely be implemented as soon as they are approved by the government. Meanwhile, some schools have even announced to increase their tuition fee by around 200 per cent. However, according to the members of public schools association, since the recommendations on the proposed fee hike are yet to be approved by the government no school can raise its fee. “It depends on the government and we are ready to go by it. If it decides to hike lesser percentage, then every school will follow it,” said S.L. Jain, chairman of National Progressive School Conference. Meanwhile, schools are in a fix as the enormous increase in teachers’ salary can only be compensated by increasing school fees. “Teachers’ salaries will increase by 55 to 80 per cent. Therefore, we have recommended a raise of 50 to 60 per cent. But as the government is still in the final stage of formation, no hikes can be implemented,” said R.C. Jain, president of Delhi State Public School Association. Whereas, some schools are awaiting the government’s final nod and are not preparing for any hikes. “We have not yet decided about any fee hike,” said Jyoti Bose, principal of Springdales. “We too are a part of the committee but we cannot say anything till a decision is reached,” said Anju Mehrotra, principal of Kalk Public School. Meanwhile, members of the committee were not available for the comment. |

CBI gets 6 more courts
New Delhi, December 19 Until now, there were five courts of Special Judges, one at Patiala House Courts, three at Tis Hazari Courts and one at Karkardooma Courts Complex. Out of these five courts, only three — one at Patiala House Courts and two at Tis Hazari Courts— exclusively hear offences investigated by the CBI. Due to this, the Courts are overburdened all the time. With these six new courts, now a total of nine Courts of Special Judges would hear CBI cases. The break-up of the Courts is, one at Patiala House Courts; four at Tiz Hazari Courts; three at Rohini Courts Complex; and one at Karkardooma Courts. Out of these nine courts, eight are exclusively dealing with corruption cases investigated by CBI. “Appointment of additional judges will now curtail the long pendency of corruption cases because now the courts will be in a position to take up cases on a day-to-day basis”, CBI spokesman, Harsh Bahl said. As on date, there are about 986 corruption cases pending in the courts. Forty four cases are 20 years old and 39 cases are pending for more than 15 years. To assist the courts effectively and for speedy disposal of cases, the CBI has decided to appoint court-wise prosecutors and prosecution. Moreover, the monitoring of the cases will be entrusted to the anti-corruption branch of Delhi, the spokesman added. Earlier, the cases were being prosecuted and monitored by different branches based at Delhi, he said. “It is hoped that the system of court-wise prosecutors will be more effective because the prosecutors will always be readily available for assistance to the court and there shall be minimum adjournments because of non-appearance of the prosecutors,” he added. |

JNU mulls cancer research lab
New Delhi, December 19 As the first step in this direction, the school has organised a two-day international symposium on ‘Novel Strategies for Targeted Prevention and Treatment of Cancer’ at the university campus, starting today. More than 300 delegates, including 50 international scientists are participating in the symposium. “This is the first time in JNU that so many international scientists have come up to share their experiences,” said Rana P. Singh, organising secretary of the symposium. He added, “Oriental countries have a variety of cancer-preventive substances. We want to make a cancer research laboratory at JNU and this symposium would help us broaden the scope of our research.” The scientists predicted that cancer would become the deadliest disease in India in three decades if not controlled. “Cancer does not cause the immediate death of a person. His/her family suffers with him/her. By treating and preventing cancer, we can save many patients and families from suffering,” said Rajesh Agarwal, professor, University of Colorado Denver, USA. “I am here to share my observations regarding skin cancer. We are also looking at cancer-preventing agents in nutrition. We have observed that green tea helps prevent skin cancer,” said Richard Eckert, professor, University of Maryland. Professor Roger Griffin from Northern Institute for Cancer Research, Newcastle University, said he was looking forward to learn about some anti-cancer ayurvedic components in India. “Being a medicinal chemist, I wanted to share my experiences with Indian scientists on modulation of DNA,” he said. Scientists said they were also looking at appropriate nutrition that would help fight cancer. “Indian nutrition has components like — curry, tea, spices, red wine and strawberries — which are effective in fighting cancer,” said Rajesh Agarwal. Talking about habits that would help keep cancer at bay, Eckert said, “Eating right food in appropriate quantity always helps. One should not consume tobacco. India has high number of patients suffering from oral cancer. While red wine helps prevent cancer, it is dangerous to consume too much alcohol. People must exercise.” The School of Life Sciences has four professors and over 20 students, who are researching different aspects of cancer. “We are working on nano-technology to detect breast cancer at an early stage,” said Atul Johri, professor. More than 30 lectures on cancer-related topics are lined up for tomorrow’s sessions. |

The sketches of other three have been released,” the police officer said. The police said despite all counters having individual alarm systems, nobody bothered to press the alarm bells to call the police. “Had the officials raised alarm, we would have zeroed in on the bank there and then,” a police constable in the Kaushambi area said. But Sandeep Mehta, the regional head of the bank, said the police arrived about 15 minutes after the robbery. “There was no police patrol nearby when the incident happened. Even after raising the alarm, the police reached late.” — IANS |
