Only 3 women members in assembly this time
Himani Chandel
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 9
The political empowerment of women in Delhi has gone for a six as just three candidates could find representations in the 70-member Delhi assembly.

Though the women had already a poor representation in the last assembly, this time also they took a further beating with their strength going down by another 50 per cent. Only 4.2 per cent women of the total strength of the Delhi assembly could find representations in the assembly this year, which was 8.5 per cent last year. While the Congress gave tickets to a total of eight women candidates, the BJP kept its number to just four, with none of them winning.

Apart from Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, there are only two other women candidates who have managed to make their way to the assembly. Kiran Walia from Malviya Nagar and Barkha Singh from RK Puram constituency, who have won for a consecutive second time from the Congress, are only two women to sit for the next term of the assembly.

On the contrary, last Delhi assembly had six women representatives, including the Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Tajdar Babbar from Jungpura, Meera Bhardwaj from Patpargunj, Anjali Rai from Pahar Ganj, Barkha Singh from RK Puram, Kiran Walia from Malviya Nagar.

“Congress has always motivated women participation in politics and that is why it had given tickets to eight women candidates but unfortunately they could not manage to prove themselves,” said Tajdar Babbar.

“It has always been simpler only for the experienced or senior women candidates to win the election as people get to identify them. The new women who come into politics have to face difficulties for a long time because people suspect their leadership,” added Babbar.

The newly elected two women MLAs have also represented the office of Delhi Commission of Women with Barkha Singh serving as its current chairperson while Kiran Walia has also worked in the same position earlier.

“All the three women who have won the mandate are experienced as they have done a lot of work in their constituencies and people identify them,” she said. However, Meera Bhardwaj who had been two time MLA from Patpargunj area and Tajdar Babbar who served three terms in Delhi assembly from Jungpura, were denied party tickets as they had openly criticised Dikshit on several occasions.

BJP putting on a brave face

New Delhi, December 9
Though simmering in dejection, the BJP camp does not want to let the poll debacle hover upon its national politics and aspirations. Amidst all inter-party mudslinging, accusations and introspection, the party leaders are wearing the mask of true sportspersons, while bracing themselves for giving a tough time to the Congress during the next year’s parliamentary elections.

The party’s Delhi chief Harsh Vardhan said that the party would bounce back to national politics in the parliamentary elections after it fixes the nuts and bolts of its operation and poll performance.

“The BJP party’s aspirations are not limited to winning elections alone. Victory and defeat are two sides of the same coin— politics. Our goal is to serve the people, and politics serves as a medium to it. We would continue doing so by rendering our support to the government on every positive step, but would not be silent on matters that would eventually harm the people of Delhi and the nation,” asserted Harsha Vardhan.

V. K. Malhotra, turning out to be the BJP’s chief ministerial contentious choice, puts on a brave face after the poll defeat, yet the mood at his residence appeared gloomy despite the fact that the septuagenarian has registered a decent win in Greater Kailash constituency by a margin of 11,231 votes.

His candidature for the Delhi’s top job has landed him in vehement criticism within his own party, since the day he was nominated for the job, against other nominees who were in the fray—Vijay Goel, M.L. Khurana and Harsh Vardhan.

The BJP side recuperating from poll bruises has contracted into a cocoon and taken the introspection route. This evening Malhotra met the veteran BJP member and leader of opposition (Lok Sabha) L.K. Advani, to discuss the party’s future plans and course of action.

Earlier, senior leaders of the party, including Harsha Vardhan, Vijay Goel, Kedar Nath Sahni had gathered at Malhotra’s residence to recover from the shock signalled by Delhiites’ verdict, and dissect the party’s pre-poll working.

Sources from the BJP party said that all the senior leaders of the party would hold a meeting either on Friday or Saturday to take stock of the situation and come down with definitive corrective measures.

Meanwhile, the party regretting its emphasis on terror plank is searching for weaker links and scrutinising its selection of candidates, and it is likely that the outcome of the discussion later in this week would be in keeping with the psyche of the Capital’s electorate.

Devotees pray for peace
Rashi
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, December 9
Several women dressed in beautiful parandi and men in impeccable white kurta pajaymas accompanied by children went to read namaj today in the morning to celebrate Id-ul-Zuha popularly known as Bakrid in the Capital.

One of the most celebrated festivals among Muslims, it is also called as the festival of sacrifice when Muslims sacrifice goat to commemorate the great sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim who sacrificed his only son Ismail when God tried to test his faith.

It is said that before making the sacrifice, Ibrahim blindfolded himself and when he removed the blindfold after performing the act, he found his son alive and smiling to his great joy. At the altar, a slaughtered lamb could be seen instead.

Since then the festival is meant to test the faith of those devoted to Islam by sacrificing animal. The sacrificial meat is distributed after the Eid prayers to family friends and neighbours.

Many families prepare special delicacies and sweets.

“It is the time when we get to eat a lot of sewiyaan and sweets. During the night there is a special treat where kema, kachori and meat are made. I just enjoy this festival very much,” said Nasreen, 23.

I hang out with my friends on Bakrid. We try to go to different mosques to worship Allah and enjoy the day by helping those in need. This is how I and my friends celebrate the festival,” said Farhan Akhtar.

According to the Islamic calendar, the festival is observed on the tenth day of the month Dhu’l Hijja.

This year, Muslims Bakrid celebrations remained at a low key. Many Muslim organisations called for simple celebration in the wake of the recent Mumbai terror attacks.

“I am very sad about the terror attacks that had not only shaken Mumbai but the nation as a whole. I pray peace for the souls who died and wish that soon the people responsible for it are tracked and punished,” said the Imam of Jama Masjid.

“We cannot celebrate when our country is not safe. We have decided to perform all the rituals silently and pray for peace in the country,” said Afzal Ahmed, 32.

Besides the attacks, this Eid was a bit expensive for the Muslims as after the Mumbai terror attacks, the supply of goats reduced to the city.

“Market did not have enough supply of goats this year so the price is comparatively higher. Even the wholesale rate is touching the sky,” said a meat shop owner in Chandni Chowk, Zakir Hazra, 35.

“The cost of goats is skyrocketing with sellers demanding as high as Rs 5,000 for a goat weighing around 10 kg. We are forced to buy them as the animal is sacrificed only once a year and it’s a part of the ritual,” said Mohammed Mustaquin Qureshi, a resident of Mayur Vihar.

Reportedly, goats weighing more than 50 kg are being sold for around Rs 1 lakh, confirmed a meat seller.

“Since Eid has a special significance, one tends to ignore the cost factor when it comes to sacrifice the animal,” said Sana Nafees, resident of Ashok Nagar.

Ghaziabad to have seven multi-tier parking lots
Our Correspondent

Ghaziabad, December 9
A number of projects have been given a green signal in Maha Nagar, Ghaziabad, including the construction of an auditorium in Nehru Nagar and multi-tier parking lots at seven different locations. The multi-level parking lots in Raj Nagar, Koshambi and Vaishali will alone cost over Rs 100 crore, it is learnt.

Nehru Nagar auditorium being built on the PPP model is estimated to cost Rs 10 crore. It will meet a long-felt need for cultural, literary and entertainment pursuits as also for having indoor games in the city.

Besides, multi-tier parking will come at the District Centre in Raj Nagar at a cost of Rs 44 crore with capacity for parking 500 cars.

A parking near metro station on PPP model has been approved by the state government in principle. Work on similar multi-level parking in Koshambi and Vaishali will also be taken up soon.

According to GDA chief engineer, Anil Garg, the provision for parking each car in multi-tier parking will cost Rs 7 lakh. This amount is likely to be recovered from the cars parked there at Rs 20 per two hours over next 20 years. A multi-level parking lot for 500 cars will cost Rs 44 crore, Garg said. All the three multi-level parking lots are likely to cost over Rs 100 crore.

The GDA has decided in favour of multi-tier parking as these will result in considerable space saving. The parking built on an area which is sufficient for parking 100 cars on ground, will have enough parking space for 500 cars.

GDA will be planning for mechanized, automatic multi-tier parking lots at seven different localities of Maha Nagar, including Sahibabad Metro station, Koshambi, Vaishali Metro station, Ghaziabad railway station, Ram Lila Grounds, old bus stand, and Nehru Nagar youth centre.

Ghaziabad city’s biggest problem right now is traffic management. City roads remain jammed for want of suitable parking lots.

Batla House Encounter
Do you say cops shot themselves, asks SC

New Delhi, December 9
Taking a serious view of a PIL petitioner’s allegation that the September 19 police-terrorist encounter in the Batla House area here was fake, the Supreme Court has sternly warned him against raising such doubts as policemen lost their lives in the shootout.

“Do you say the police shot themselves,” a Bench comprising Chief Justice K.G. Balakrishnan and Justice P. Sathasivam asked the petitioner, who claimed that he was running an NGO and a security agency and was a witness to the encounter.

“We feel you have been set up by someone…the police is monitoring you…We can have your antecedents verified,” the CJI told the petitioner yesterday, dismissing his PIL.

If he had information about the encounter, he could assist those investigating the incident, Justice Sathasivam said.

The NGO, Real Cause, run by the petitioner had just three persons — president, secretary and member — the judges noted, wondering how it could contribute to health and education.

Refusing to talk to reporters, the petitioner, who pleaded his case personally, made a hurried exit from the court. — TNS

New Delhi, December 9
On the first hearing of the stay imposed on Jawaharlal Nehru Students’ Union (JNUSU) elections by the Supreme Court yesterday, the court accepted the application of the union that states the modifications in the Lyngdoh committee recommendations.

JNUSU considers the step a positive move. “It is a positive move. Our application has been accepted for the review. We are hoping the court would consider our apprehensions,” said Sandeep, president, JNUSU.

The JNUSU lawyer has drafted a 25-page long application stating logical reasons due to which Lyngdoh recommendations cannot be implemented in JNU in their present state.

We are trying to do everything that we could to re-establish the democratic tradition of JNUSU elections,” said Roshan, member of Joint Struggle Committee formulated by the JNU students to fight against the stay order.

However, the Supreme Court imposed a stay on the elections saying that the JNUSU elections violated the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations for the student union elections.

“In the early morning and night, mist and shallow fog cover is also likely,” he said.
