Sensex closes at 8,701, lowest since ‘05
Mumbai, October 24
A double whammy from a tepid mid-term credit policy by the RBI and bearish global market caused the Sensex plunge 11 per cent or 1,070 points dragging virtually every stock on the bellwether index to new 52-week lows. The Sensex ended the day below 9,000 at 8,701 points. In the broader markets, the Nifty was down 359 points at 2,584.

Asia prepares, keeps $80b in kitty

Asian nations today recommitted themselves to establishing an $80 billion emergency fund, as leaders from across Asia and Europe gathered in Beijing to discuss the global financial meltdown. The pledge by South Korea, China, Japan and the 10-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations was reached at a breakfast meeting, according to the office of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak, who attended the meeting.

At least 2.7 million factory workers in southern China could lose their jobs as the global economic crisis hits the demand for electronics, toys and clothes, according to industry estimates.

To cover 15 km, Patil uses chopper

A chopper was used by Union home minister Shivraj Patil to cover a 15-km distance from Safdurjung airport to Khanpur within the city ostensibly to avoid the crowded thoroughfares. Patil took the aerial route to attend the 47th Raising Day Parade of Indo-Tibetan Border Police function held at Tigri in Khanpur in South Delhi.

It is perhaps for the first time in recent years that a Head of State has requested an Indian Prime Minister to make available the services of Punjab farmers.
