The Sensex continued its
downward trajectory as global equities took a beating defying
attempts by governments and central banks to restore
confidence in financial institutions around the world.
* Japan’s Nikkei 225 dropped nearly 10%
* Singapore’s Straits Times plunges more than 7%
* London Stock Exchange’s FTSE 100 down 7.24%
* Germany’s Dax Index was down nearly 10%
* France’s CAC 40 fell over 8%
* Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was at three-year low
* Korea’s Kospi Index tumbled over 4%
* China’s Shanghai SE Composite also fell 4%

Reserve Bank cuts
CRR again Mumbai, October 10
The Reserve Bank of India today
increased the quantum of reduction in the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) for
scheduled banks in order to release more than Rs 60,000 crore into the
system. In a statement issued here, the RBI said CRR of 8.5 per cent
that was to come into effect from Saturday would be further reduced to
7.5 per cent.
PM’s
olive branch to separatists Srinagar, October 10
In
an effort to resolve the prevailing stalemate in Jammu and Kashmir,
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today sent out an open invitation to all
separatist elements in the state to come forward for talks, giving an

PM
urges political parties to end communal tension Srinagar, October 10
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh here
today urged the political parties in Jammu and Kashmir to play their
role to end the regional and communal tension in the state that had
arisen due to the Amarnath land transfer row. Talking to mediapersons
after meeting leaders of various political parties at the SKICC here
this evening, Manmohan Singh regretted the violence over the transfer of
a piece of land to the Amarnath Shrine Board.
Finland's
former President Martti Ahtisaari won the Nobel Peace Prize today
for a decades-long career of peacemaking around the world, from
Namibia to Kosovo. The Norwegian Nobel Committee chose Ahtisaari
to receive the $1.4 million prize from 197 candidates "for
his important efforts, on

successive governments.
