IF you ask any student why is he doing a particular course, the answer probably would be both disturbing and perplexing: “My parents, friends told me to do it.” In most cases, one would get silent answer, while in others, the student would shift the entire responsibility of his or her actions to some one else.

Choose your course carefully
D.S. Cheema

IF you ask any student why is he doing a particular course, the answer probably would be both disturbing and perplexing: “My parents, friends told me to do it.” In most cases, one would get silent answer, while in others, the student would shift the entire responsibility of his or her actions to some one else.

Why is it that students seem to have no role in what is perhaps the most crucial decision of their lives? We live in a society where even adults do not take the most important decisions of life. People are happy when some one else makes decisions on their behalf. This may be for any number of reasons, including lack of knowledge, fear of the unknown, lack of self-confidence, etc. When forced to make a decision on their own, they would like to tread the safest path. For example, a businessman would like his son to join his business after doing a management course. Without caring about his son’s desires, he wants him to follow his footsteps. Likewise, an engineer father feels engineering is the best profession under the sun. An IAS or PCS officer thinks that it will lower his prestige in society, if one of his children does not get through the civil services examination. Thus, the decision to join a particular discipline or profession in our society is not made by a child but by parents. That’s why the child puts in virtually no resistance and succumbs to the pressure of parents and well-wishers willingly.

One of the major reasons is that parents seek fulfilment of their unfulfilled desires through their children. So, they tend to overlook the aptitude, inclination, potential and aspirations of their children. This practice is more prevalent in villages where both the parents and children have limited exposure to the outside world. It has been observed that it is often the workers or managers with village background who cannot reconcile to the demands of their profession at a later stage. They keep struggling throughout their service to find job satisfaction. Even years after joining the ‘forced’ profession, they feel that they could have done far better had they joined a profession of their own choice.

The importance of right career choice at the earliest opportunity cannot be over emphasised. This demands identifying what a student wants to get on his own. It is important for the parents to realise that their desire to see their children fulfil their parents’ career dreams is irrational. At the same time, children should try and get out of the shadows of their parents and take such decisions on their own. However, most of the students are neither aware of what is involved in taking a career decision nor are they ready to take over this responsibility from their parents. Students should not fall prey to ignorance, which is responsible for indecision on their part. They must understand that it is important to know what course to do and then do that to their best ability.

Job markets are very competitive and in the present business environment, they are bound to get more and more out of reach of a person of average competence. The competence level is directly proportional to the aptitude, potential and effort. No one can rise above a mediocre level unless and until a person knows his or her true aptitude and potential. This knowledge needs to be supplemented by educated parents, teachers and well-wishers. Misplaced confidence in one’s imaginary ability is the bane of many students. They should not get into the trap of any type of misinformation, sycophancy, ego, etc., while making a decision about their career. Many a student found himself at the crossroads due to all kinds of information, including a lot of junk information, which he is not able to analyse for the want of knowledge and experience.

Students should gather as much data, information and knowledge as can be collected in available time, analyse it with the help of parents, teachers, friends, etc., and then take a rational decision. Over assessing oneself for any task results in frustration as one can stretch as much as one likes but will never be able to achieve a target set without knowing one’s real ability. Such targets will always remain beyond one’s reach.

It is common knowledge that everyone in the arts stream aspires to get into the civil services, and every one with medical or non-medical streams wants only to become a doctor or an engineer. According to experts, there are more than 27,000 career options in today’s world. What course a student opts for is important, but how it is done is even more important. So, young boys and girls should start exploring and analysing the career options right from Class X by matching their aptitude and ability. Every possible support in choosing the right career should be taken carefully.
