Amritsar, September 28
The authorisation committee, headed by Tarn Taran deputy commissioner Khushi Ram, has stayed the case pertaining to donation of kidney to additional deputy commissioner allegedly by an unrelated donor.
The members of the committee were embarrassed when the district police told at a meeting that the verification of Sunny (the donor), a resident of Chhehrta, pertained to routine verification, which had nothing to do with the kidney transplant case. The meeting was also attended by Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, district police chief, who had earlier busted a kidney racket in 2002.
Now, the next date of committee’s meeting, comprising civil surgeon, representatives of the Indian Medical Association and Police Department, has been fixed for October 3.
The committee on September 25 had cleared the case of the alleged unrelated donor as a special case because the prospective recipient is the additional deputy commissioner. It was after many years that such a case had been cleared by the committee. However, the deputy commissioner had claimed that the case had been cleared in a high-powered committee meeting held in the Circuit House, Amritsar. The deputy commissioner had claimed that the donor and his father had given their statement that the ADC, who was admitted to a hospital in Mohali belonged to their community and hence they were donating the organ out of sheer “love and affection”.
The office of the SSP, in a letter to the civil surgeon has said such verifications should not be sent to his office. It claimed that the police verification, done by the SHO of the Islamabad police station, had nothing to do with the kidney transplant case. The missive stated that it was the duty of the authorisation committee to do such verifications. The verification done by the SHO had only verified the address, criminal record of the donor, which was found to be
correct.
