Jalandhar, September 25
A school-going boy was kidnapped from Partabpura village, 8 km from here, early this morning for a ransom of Rs 30 lakh. The district police was tightlipped on such a sensitive case.

A student of class III of Manav Sahyog School at Shahpur village, Tajinder Singh, alias Kaka, was picked up by kidnappers from the village road where he had gone to skip his school bus.
Principal’s indifference

The unconcerned behaviour of the educational institution in which Tajinder Singh was studying reflected when Sunita Babu, principal of Manav Sahyog School, said that the school was not concerned abut the kidnapping incident.

“The boy was kidnapped from the village and not from the school premises. However, we are concerned about it,” claimed the principal. “He was a regular student and was normal in studies. We came to know about his kidnapping from his sister Lovepreet Kaur who is studying in class VII in our school,” she claimed.

Since Kaka was not willing to go to the school, he approached one of his neighbours, Tajinder Singh, for his cycle and went away before the school bus arrived to pick him up.

According to neighbours, a hue and cry was raised when he did not return home. Panic gripped the village when Tajinder Singh found his bicycle lying abandoned at a graveyard adjacent to Eklavya School in the village.

The parents of the boy were shocked after the kidnappers made a phone call at his mother’s mobile phone demanding a ransom of Rs 30 lakh. The caller also threatened the family with dire consequences if it tried to contact the police. Talking to The Tribune, Lovepreet Kaur, sister of the boy, revealed that Kaka left home at about 6 am saying that he would go to the village well. “He often used to make excuses and run away from home whenever he did not want to go to the school,” said Lovepreet with tears in her eyes.

Mohinder Singh, a relative, said the parents started searching him when his did not return but in vain. After over an hour, some caller made a phone call from a mobile phone (9988674121) to Kaka’s mother Amarjit Kaur. Apprehending that the kidnappers might kill the boy, the family was quite scared and even avoided mediapersons who assembled at their house. The father, Ranbir Singh, alias Buta Singh, along with relatives, friends and elderly persons of village, including the sarpanch, went to the police station at Lambra to lodge a complaint.

A visit by The Tribune team revealed that relatives, friends and neighbours had assembled at the house of Ranbir Singh. The sympathisers were seen praying for Kaka’s safety.

Interestingly, the police was tightlipped over the incident even though “kidnapping of a schoolboy for ransom”. When contacted, Jalandhar SSP P.K. Rai said, “No comments on the issue. The family has neither informed the police nor given any complaint regarding kidnapping of the boy.”

This is the second kidnapping for ransom in the city in past one year. Earlier, Micky, a son of a Jalandhar-based businessman, was kidnapped for a ransom of Rs 1 crore. The boy was kidnapped by local Congress municipal councillor Sukhmeet, alias Deputy, and his six accomplices. The boy was kidnapped from near Nakodar and was later released after taking the ransom.

Amritsar, September 25
The water samples taken by the health department from Kammowali Gali, near Jallianwala Bagh memorial and Rani Ka Bagh area, have failed. The samples were taken after a number of cases of jaundice were reported in the city.

Confirming this, district epidemiologist Dr Swarnjit Dhawan said they received the report on Thursday evening itself and would write to the municipal corporation in this regard to take immediate steps to provide safe drinking water to the affected localities and check the contamination of water.

Rani ka Bagh is one of the posh areas of the Civil Lines and comes under the mayor’s ward.

The spread of jaundice was allegedly due to faulty and contaminated water supply in these areas. However, the health department claimed to have the situation under control after its teams visited the area and distributed chlorine tablets and asked residents to take the necessary precautions.

Meanwhile, two more cases of dengue have been reported in the city, raising the number of dengue patients to 12.

They have been identified as Om Parkash of Chamde Wala Bazaar and Gaurav Arora of Hussainpura, who have been admitted to Escort Hospital here.

A woman had already died of dengue even as the health department has constituted 13 medical teams which had fanned out in the city, especially in the slum areas in the periphery of the city.

‘Only 30 pc Indo-B’desh border fenced’
Our Correspondent

Hoshiarpur, September 25
The recent survey conducted by a team of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on the Indo-Bangladesh border in north-eastern states revealed that fencing of only 30 per cent of the border has been done, which is also in a poor condition due to the alleged use of substandard material.

The recent tall claims of the UPA government in parliament that the fencing work on the Indo-Bangladesh border in north-eastern states is almost 70 per cent complete and the remaining will be completed by the end of this year proved to be wrong.

This was stated in a press note issued by the zila parmukh (president) of the ABVP, Manu Sharma, here this afternoon. The team surveyed 1,074 km-long international border in 12 border districts of four north-eastern states - Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura and Mizoram. The members of the team covered 78 km-long remote areas by foot and 45 km through boats.

For the last few years, a large scale infiltration from Bangladesh has been taking place in the north-eastern states. A detailed report to this account by the former governor of Assam S.K. Sinha was submitted to the President of India. The growing terrorism, smuggling and various other illegal activities have posed a serious threat to the national security in the north-eastern states, about which the UPA government is not serious, alleged Manu Sharma.

At most of the places in Meghalaya, the fencing is old and in poor condition. The gates erected at some places are badly damaged. Similarly in Tripura, most of the border is open and the old fencing at certain places has worn out. Out of 80 km-long border in Mizoram, only 7 km-long border had been fenced and that, too, is in a very poor condition. One more interesting fact is that there is no fencing along rivers, ponds and in interior regions, alleged Manu Sharma.
