SC hands over GPF scam probe to CBI
New Delhi, September 23
The Supreme Court today directed the CBI to probe the Ghaziabad GPF scam, allegedly involving some judges, and submit its report within three months. A Bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat asked the CBI to nominate an investigating officer to lead the probe with the assistance of the Uttar Pradesh government officials and taking infrastructure facilities from that state.

‘Confer powers on outside authority’

Agonised by judicial scrutiny of decisions taken by presiding officers, Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee today advocated conferment of powers on matters of defection to an outside authority.

No delivery charges in govt hospitals
Chandigarh, September 23
The government today decided in principle to waive all medical charges on delivery cases in government hospitals. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the council of ministers here this evening. It was chaired by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal.
