samiti suspends stir Pact reached on
Amarnath land row Jammu, August 31
After over two months of
stir, the Amarnath land row was finally resolved with the
state government agreeing to set aside 800 kanals of land in
Baltal exclusively for the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board during
the annual Amarnath yatra period. With this the Amarnath Yatra
Sangharsh Samiti also announced to suspend its ongoing
agitation over the issue.

After a few days of
relative calm, the situation turned restive today as people
took to the streets at several places protesting among other
things the accord between the Amarnath Yatra Sangharsh Samiti
and four-member panel appointed by Governor N.N. Vohra.

Fresh
areas in Bihar go under water Patna, August 31
With the Kosi water engulfing fresh
areas in Bihar's 16 northeastern districts, the flood situation in the
state worsened today. However, there was some good news for the first
time since the region was gripped by the deluge about two weeks ago with
a senior official saying the flood situation would improve as the flow
of water from Nepal had come down.

A woman officer who had levelled
allegations of physical and mental harassment against her superior
officers last month now faces a possible trial by general court martial
(GCM) for her alleged acts of professional impropriety, it is learnt.

Lanka clashes
Colombo, August 31
At least 11 LTTE cadres and three
security personnel were killed in clashes between the Tamil Tigers and
the army in the restive northern Sri Lanka, the defence ministry said
today. In pursuit of the Tamil rebels encircled at Konketiyawa, East of
the Padawiya tank in Welfoya, the security forces said at least 10
militants’ bodies were found scattered in the areas.
