14 killed in Lanka clashes

Colombo, August 31
At least 11 LTTE cadres and three security personnel were killed in clashes between the Tamil Tigers and the army in the restive northern Sri Lanka, the defence ministry said today.

In pursuit of the Tamil rebels encircled at Konketiyawa, East of the Padawiya tank in Welfoya, the security forces said at least 10 militants’ bodies were found scattered in the areas.

Intermittent gunfire exchanges were reported in the area since this morning as troops claimed to have sealed all “way-routes” combined with the Civil Defence Force (CDF) personnel.

The army’s elite Special Force (SF) troops were immediately reinforced after clashes broke out between CDF and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) since early this morning, the ministry said.

A civilian was also reported wounded due to the indiscriminate LTTE gunfire and later transferred to the General Hospital at Anuradhapura.

“The LTTE group may have been given specific orders to infiltrate into the liberate areas and cause destruction to both civilian and military targets triggering a slow down of the military advances into the last lTTE bastion in Kilinochchi and Mullaittivu districts,” it said.

At least three security personnel, including a Civil Defence Force (CDF) trooper, were killed while identical number of securitymen were reported injured in yesterday’s confrontation, according to reports received. — PTI
