Metro reserves seats for women
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 7
Delhi Metro now has reserved seats for women. As many as 16 seats in each train have been earmarked for women, four in each coach, from today onwards DMRC spokesman Anuj Dayal says, adding that stickers reading “For Ladies Only” have been put up inside coaches to mark the reserved seats.

Every Metro train has 186 seats. While the first and last coaches have 43 seats each, the two coaches in between have 50 seats each. The decision to reserve seats was taken after women commuters made requests to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Each Metro coach already has four seats reserved for elderly and physically challenged and there are also special spaces for wheelchairs in coaches at both ends.

The DMRC had been making announcements inside trains and at platforms requesting commuters to vacate seats for the elderly, physically challenged and ladies. Such announcements are made more frequently at Rajiv Chowk and Kashmere Gate interchange stations, which witness footfall in lakhs.

The Delhi Metro had an average daily ridership of 702,731 in June 2008, of which 30 per cent are women.

Currently each Metro train has four coaches which will be increased to six coaches in some sectors after Phase II becomes operational as the trains have a capacity to accommodate eight coaches.

The DMRC is also in the process of procuring another 616 coaches for Phase II keeping in view the increasing rush of passengers and the popularity in Delhi.

Woman sexually exploited by father-in-law
Asked to leave husband for good
Ou r Correspondent

Ghaziabad, July 7
A young woman, Shabnam (name changed) from Loni town in Ghaziabad, who had been sexually exploited by her father-in-law, will have to leave her husband, for good.

Like in the “Imrana episode of Muzzafarnagar”, Ulemas in this case of Saharanpur have also ruled that her husband will have to divorce Shabnam.

There is no other way, the clerics have ordered.

According to Maulana Khurshid Aalam Kazmi, the incharge Maulana of Fatwa wing of Darul Alum Wakf, the woman who is raped by her father-in-law becomes ‘haram’ for her own husband.

In such a situation, it becomes obligatory for the husband to divorce his wife.

Such a woman can, however, marry someone else after the expiry of the mandatory period.

In such a case, the children of the couple, if they are young, will remain with mother and, if older, can live with their father.

For the rapist man, according to Mufti Mohammed Arif Ansari, the Shariat has prescribed punishment of death by throwing stones.

However, such a punishment is possible under an Islami government only, Mufti Mohd Ansari added.

Parmindar Singh

Greater Noida, July 7
Panic struck the Greater Noida area after bodies of two unidentified women were found on the service lane of the Expressway near village Nalgarha under Surajpur police station. The bodies have been sent for autopsy.

The Greater Noida Police has sought help from all police stations in NCR and Delhi for the identification of the body.

The necks of both the bodies were slit and the police suspect that the women were thrashed before being killed.

According to the Surajpur police, one woman appeared to be around 70 years while the other about 50 years of age. Their necks had been slit with a sharp-edged weapon. There were many injury marks all over their bodies and the hand of one of them was fractured. Much blood was not found on the spot so it is believed that they were killed elsewhere and their bodies were dumped here.

The information about the bodies was given to the police by Raj Veer, a resident of Nalgarha village at around 10 a.m. yesterday.

SSP R.K. Chaturvedi said that both of them appeared to be Punjabi as the elderly woman’s right arm bore her name, Manjit Kaur tattooed in Punjabi. However, none of the Punjabi residents of Nalgarha village could identify the deceased.

The police said that both the women are possibly from the same family and it appeared that they were killed because of some property dispute.

Minister sees BSP as threat to Congress
Ravi S.Singh
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, July 7
Haryana’s education minister Mangeram Gupta feels that the Bahujan Samaj Party could be a threat to the Congress in Haryana in the next Lok Sabha elections.

Gupta, who was here for a private function, expressed his apprehensions about the BSP, while responding to a question. He said that the Congress must remain vigilant about the moves of BSP in Haryana.

In response to a related question about threat from the INLD and BJP, he said that the INLD headed by Om Prakash Chautala and the BJP, individually or even in alliance with each other, cannot take on the Congress in Haryana.

He said that the Congress was the most acceptable party among the people.

The Congress government has done enough developmental works and was following pro-people policies.

The party was confident about polls in the state, he added.

Referring to the education system in the state, he said that his government’s priority was to boost-up the academic standard at all levels of education.

He said that a number of steps have already been taken and the process to further improve the situation was still on.

With regard to the Edu-set model introduced in the state not making much headway, he said that the teachers were being sensitised to the system to make it a success.

He said that semester system would not be implemented in colleges in the 2008-09 academic session due to technical reason. He, however, was optimistic about its implementation thereafter.

Gupta, who is also minister for Transport, said that the new agreement signed between the governments of Haryana and the National Capital Territory of Delhi, a few days ago, would enable better mobility between the two states. Buses of Haryana were penalised in some parts of Delhi due to lack of requisite provisions in the earlier agreement.

Gupta announced that the Haryana Roadways has introduced 10 AC buses from Gurgaon to Chandigarh on an experimental basis.

Depending on it success, other districts will also be linked up with the state capital through such buses, he added.

Copycat teens driven to suicide, say psychiatrists
Ravi Bhatia
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 7
The recent spurt in the number of suicides and violent incidents involving teenagers and adolescents, including cases of stabbings and shootings in schools, is the direct result of the copycat syndrome. This is the opinion of psychiatrists and psychologists working with schoolchildren and teenagers.

These experts recall how a teenager tried to jump off a cliff few years back after watching his icon Akshay Kumar perform the exhilarating stunt in one of the soft-drink commercials.  Then came the Shaktiman episode and now it’s the new cartoon series on the television in which the hero performs superhuman feats.

The very act of imitating a renowned character or a living personality and then beginning to put yourself in his shoes is called the copycat syndrome, also the hero-worship tendencies, and its adverse effect leads to copycat suicides, prevalent among adolescents worldwide.

“Copycat is a very common tendency among adolescents where they tend to imitate the person they like, be it in their peer group or a celebrity”, says Dr Samir Parikh, psychiatrist, chief of department of mental health & behavioral sciences, Max Healthcare here. Adolescents are in the evolving stage of their personality, malleable and easily influenced; hence to look ‘cool’ they follow their idol blindly, assuming it to be correct always.

“Indulgence in smoking, bunking, thefts and car-speeding are some of the common misacts due to copy-cat tendencies”, he points out. Without realising its consequences, they blindly follow their idol or peer groups, which gives them a boost.  This can take an adverse shape in the form of copy-cat suicides, where suicide is hyped and made to sound ‘exciting’ and adolescents attempt to follow it by doing it themselves.

Copycat suicides have been termed after Werther Syndrome named after the novel, ‘The sorrows of young Werther”. In today’s scenario, schoolchildren tend to commit suicide after hearing about suicides of their peers in the media. The whole idea of suicide is glamourised and sensationalised, evoking an interest in their minds about the same. He says.

So, how does one cope with such phenomenon? “Every teenager experiences such tendencies at some point of time, but it’s important to tackle it carefully, parents and teachers should focus on skill-building of the child, so that he has a  strong self-esteem and assertive personality, to own an identity of himself,” says Dr Parikh.

“He must be assertive enough not to get influenced by his peers and make his own decisions; also they must endeavor to use this tendency to create a pro-social behaviour in the child, to imbibe positive traits in him,” he further adds.

Dr Vinita Jha, psychiatrist at Umkal Healthcare, says, “There were cases, in recent months, where parents approached me discussing their ward’s desire to know about the world after death and why people commit suicides. But, all I want to say is in spite of copying it negatively, teenagers should act in a responsible manner and look at the positive aspect of copying people.”

“Open dialogue should be there between both the parents and wards on what is right or wrong. They should also keep a check on their activities and their learning content through books and internet,” further adds Dr Jha.

Protesting lootings, Kalkaji traders block road
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 7
Traffic in the Kalkaji area of South Delhi was thrown out of gear for several hours today as angry shopkeepers of the area blocked the main road to protest against the increasing incidents of looting and lawlessness.

Shouting slogans against the police, the traders alleged that despite their complaints to the police no action had been taken to provide them security.

The agitation by the traders of the area was the result of the looting incident last night, in which armed desperadoes made away with the day’s earning of a shopkeeper.

Agitated shopkeepers alleged that this was the third such incident in the area within a week and the police had done little to either trace the suspects or provide security to the shopkeepers.

The shopkeepers were later pacified by senior police officers who reached the spot and promised that adequate measures would be taken to provide security to them. The police said that while mobile patrolling was being intensified in the area, pickets were also being set up at some of the strategic locations in the main market.
