Cong begins assembly poll preparations
New Delhi, July 2 As inflation, sealing and demolition are expected to be the election issues for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress will talk about the UPA government’s achievements on the national level. It will also talk about the development works carried out by the Delhi government, said in-charge of Delhi affairs Ashok Gehlot and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. They said that the party party workers would visit every area of the city to help the residents. Citing the UPA’s achievements, Congress leader Sri Prakash Jaiswal said the internal security of country had improved tremendously during the UPA rule. During the BJP rule terrorist attacks were mounted on the Parliament House, the Red Fort and other important places. However, the Congress has lost the elections in Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Punjab. The party was also defeated in the municipal elections held last year and the cantonment board polls this year. The party has discussed the issues that led to its defeat. AICC general secretary Janardan Dwivedi has suggested the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) leadership to strengthen the organisational set up so that party workers do not feel sidelined and work at the grass root level. They play a significant role in winning the elections. They go door to door and convince people to vote for the party. Active party workers were ignored and were not given tickets during the municipal elections. They either contested as independent candidates or joined other political parties. The same had happened in the cantonment board elections. Consequently, the party suffered serious jolts and the BJP came to power in both local bodies. Dwivedi further said money should not be the criterion for selecting candidates. Importance should be laid on their image in the area.About the candidates, DPCC president Jai Prakash Aggarwal said four months were left for the elections and it was too early to decide the candidates. |

Hoax bomb calls keep cops on toes
New Delhi, July 2 The PCR has received six calls regarding the planting of bomb at the Chawri Bazar Metro Rail Station in the last about one and a half months and all of them have turned out to be ‘hoax calls’. The Delhi Police has not only failed to find out the culprit, it is also ignorant whether the same person is making the call or there are different persons involved in the prank. The team of Intelligence Bureau has visited the Chowri Bazar Metro Rail Station a few days back and one of their recommendations has been installment of more cameras at the station. Inspector Virender Dutt, who took a voluntary retirement from services (VRS) on Monday and was the SHO of the Kashmeri Gate Metro Police Station when these calls were made, said that the ‘hoax bomb calls’ for Chowri Bazar Metro Rail Station have been the biggest nuisance of his career. When asked as to who could be making the calls, the former Inspector opines, “This is definitely not the handiwork of any professional criminal or organization. I am sure somebody who had fallen on the wrong side of CISF guards manning the rail stations is making these calls to bully the men in uniform. Sometimes these CISF guards rough up people unnecessarily,” says Dutt. He pointed out that the reason the caller always targets Cha wri Bazar is that it is the deepest Metro Station (115 metres) in the Capital and exerts lots of physical efforts on the part of individual to move in or out of the station. “The fact that whether the call is being made from Rajiv Gandhi Metro Terminal or Daryaganj, the station chosen is always Chowri Bazar says something. The caller knows that searching this station can be quite gruelling in physical terms. He is only doing so to harass the policemen, opines Dutt. Of the two calls made from a PCO at Rajiv Gandhi Metro Terminal in Connaught Place, the camera failed to capture the ‘caller’ as the call was made when the moving camera panned to the side away from the public booth. Dutt says that all these things point out that a caller is someone aware of the facts about Metro stations and the security arrangements there. All the calls made to ‘100’ number are automatically taped. And so it has been in the case of these hoax bomb calls. However, even after the lapse of almost 50 days when the first call was made and about five days when the last call came in, the Delhi Police is yet to receive the result of ‘audio tapes’. The audiotapes examination can verify whether the voice is of a different person or the same person is making the call. It can also tell about the age of the person. |

Commonwealth Games
New Delhi, July 2 This decision has been taken in connection with the Commonwealth Games. During the games, foreigners will visit the city. It will send the wrong message if they have difficulty in locating places, said Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta. Surender Singh, a BJP councilor, suggested that house numbers, blocks and areas should be mentioned on the boards. But the corporation has only Rs 1 lakh budget for doing this job and this amount is not sufficient. Secondly, boards installed by the MCD are not of good quality. Municipal Commissioner K. S. Mehra said installing signboards was one of the obligatory functions of the corporation. This has been mentioned in the master plan also. Regarding quality of the board, he said it would be checked and improved. He assured that there would be no dearth of money for doing the work. Vijender Gupta directed the Municipal Commissioner that expenditure money for installing the signboards should be increased from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 10 crore. |

Surgeries of three organs at one go
Faridabad, July 2 According to the hospital authorities, it was the first time in the country that surgeries of three organs on a patient were done at the same time. Rather, it was claimed that such description has not been found in the English medical literature. The patient,
Kamlesh, a resident of Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, contacted the hospital and surgeries were conducted more than a month back. The surgeries were conducted by Dr Prabal Roy, head of the surgery department of the hospital. Following her recuperation, the patient was presented to the media today. Dr Roy said that the spleen was operated upon through laproscopy method while the lung and liver were operated through open chest surgery. The intervention on the liver and lung was done via chest. There were two worms in the lung, and one each in the spleen and liver. According to the doctor, the necessity for opting in favour of surgeries on the three organs in one sitting was felt as there were chances of the worms multiplying and getting into other parts of the body which could prove fatal. He said that it took about seven hours to complete the
surgeries. Kamlesh said that she was feeling fine now. Dr Roy said that dog tape worm is infected accidentally in humans via dogs. The patient hails from the rural belt where mixing with domestic animals is a matter of routine. |

DU second cut-off list proves boon for many
New Delhi, July 2 Sonali Rathore from Jaipur comments, “The second cut-off has proved a boon for me, I think I should manage to get admission at LSR in the B. Com. programme there. I have a 94.5% aggregate and am hopeful. I already have admission at Miranda House. I also hope to get hostel but am quite prepared to stay outside with a few friends if I don’t get it.” Many students who have got admission in commerce programmes in less popular colleges are rushing to the big names like SRCC, Hindu, LSR, Hans Raj etc as they now stand a fair chance of getting admission after the drop in cut-offs for commerce. However, the rush is considerable and the fight will be over .5%. For science students, the picture looks quite a bit easier, the second cut-off has yielded a substantial dip in percentages in many colleges including popular ones. Ankit Khurana from Allahabad says, “I have admission in a botany hons course at two colleges already but I want to get into Hindu. I have a 90.5% aggregate and have been assured of making it. I don’t think it should be as problem.” The rush for arts courses at LSR is massive following the second cut-off. The fight for the few remaining seats is tough. A teacher at the college says, “We have had a huge rush here since morning. Most of the girls want English hons but there are very few seats. I am surprised at this great demand for English among students this year. This is definitely a new trend.” LSR has marginally dipped its percentages in many arts courses. |

Pregnant women must avoid
anti-acne creams
New Delhi, July 2 Recent medical case histories have indicated that applying such creams during pregnancy could trigger off abnormalities in the growing embryo as all of them contain a chemical called Ttretinoin. This chemical is a retinol (vitamin A) derivative which is often recommended by doctors and skin specialists for the treatment of damaged skin which includes acne. Doctors claim that the chemical seeps into the blood through the skin pores when applied on the face and then is transmitted to all parts of the body and to the growing embryo through the umbilical chord. “I come across many pregnant women with acne problem. I advise them not to apply such creams as they adversely affect the unborn child. The effect of the cream can persist for as long as a month after its discontinuation,” says Dr Shivani Sachdev Gour, consultant gynaecologist and infertility specialist with Phoenix Hospital here. According to Dr Gour, the chemical in these creams affects every single system of the human body with disastrous effects and can damage the brain, arms and legs, lead to even a hole in the heart, mental retardation, cleft palate, ear defects, abnormal vision due to nerve damage and urinary system anomalies in the child. Other doctors have suggested that a detailed medical and sexual history of the patient, especially women in the child-bearing age, has to be scrutinised before recommending these creams because of these side effects. “Women planning to go for such medication are advised to seek expert opinion first and to be on the safer side they should use natural acne remedies or home remedies for acne instead of these creams,” stresses Dr Jyoti Sharma, obstetrician and gynaecologist, Umkal Hospital here. |
