Bathinda, March 6
“I and my sister, Madhawi have been studying here for the past three years as our father was transferred from Patna in Bihar. We both are fond of newspapers but we were hurt to read the news regarding the statement issued by some political leader accusing our community as ‘undesirable’, said 15-year-old Shreya, daughter of a bank employee.

Shreya and Madhawi are not the only ones, who underwent shock. There is a large population of Bihari migrants, who has rued about the baselessness of the allegations levelled upon them, by Bal Thackeray, chief of the Shiv Sena, by an editorial article.

When Jeevan Ram, a rickshaw puller, hailing from Aloli village in Khagaria district in Bihar was apprised of the statement, in a feeble tone he said, “I have been residing in Bathinda for the last decade and during the whole span, I was not involved in any kind of controversy, so it would be wrong to term all the Biharis irritating and provoking the local population.”

“It is really astonishing to read Thackeray’s statement in which he had said that Biharis are unwanted everywhere in India. If it had been correct then I would not have been here in such a repudiated newspaper, said a correspondent of a Hindi newspaper.

“We migrated to Punjab as the state offers more avenues of employment in comparison to Bihar and other states. I am here to earn my livelihood, so that I could give a comfortable life to my three kids who still reside in my native village in Bihar. So it is really unjustified to target us for some political mileage,” lamented a mason, Rajan Ram of Bihar, one of the workers at the construction site of the judicial complex.

It may be mentioned that in an editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamna’ published on March 5, the Shiv Sena Supremo, Bal Thackeray churn out spleen on the Bihari migrants. “They are not wanted in South India, Assam, Punjab and Chandigarh. The Biharis have antagonised local populations wherever they are settled,” Thackeray wrote.

Despite several attempts, the Member of Parliament from Bathinda, Paramjeet Kaur Gulshan and the deputy commissioner Rahul Tewari were not avialable for comment.

Bathinda, March 6
It was religious fervour at its zenith at the Dussehra Grounds where ‘Mount Kailash’, (abode of Lord Shiva) was recreated with idols of gods and goddesses embedded in it. The rare spectacle was delighting with divinity descending on the devotees seeking the divine bliss.

The devotees of Lord Shiva had organised ‘Shiv Jagran’ (night long recital of bhajans and devotional songs) at the Dussehra nad railway grounds in fascinating setting with Himalayas in the backdrop.

The sight was so riveting that the devotees forgot the idols and their eyes remained glued to giant size tabuleax of Himalayas which was artistically done up. Thousands of devotees’ thronged to Shiv temples, offered worship, observed fast and participated in various religious functions.

Bhajan and kirtan were held in temples, which were beautifully decorated, and a large number of women devotees joined the festivities. The devotees made a beeline to Prachin Shiv Temple here from wee hours of the morning and chanting of mantras and religious discourses continued throughout the day.

The priest said that today the temple had become the ‘Manokamana Sthal’ where devotees paid respect to the deity. A unique feature of this day was that ‘prasad’ was given in the form of ‘ghota’.

Langars and Bhandara (free kitchen) were organized. A ‘shobha yatra’ with women devotees carrying “kalash” on their heads and depicting 32 “jhankis” on Shivalingam was taken out yesterday. The remarkable feature of the Yatra was that thirty-two religious bodies organized it jointly.

Though the decision of hike in milk price by almost Rs 3 per litre by various dairy associations of the state affected the common man, Verka has emerged as their saviour. It has now launched a five-litre pack priced at Rs 97.50, which means that the company would offer milk at Rs 19.50 per litre as against the market rate of Rs 24-25.

In April last year too, the price of milk was increased by the dairy associations by Rs 3 per litre.

Talking to TNS, Capt Kanwaljit Singh, State Cooperation Minister, said, “We have launched this five litre pack on a trial basis in some districts besides we have also introduced the concept of unpacked milk at some of the milk plants. Unpacked milk would cost Rs 19 a litre. We are passing on the packing charges to the customer.”

An official of Verka Milk Plant at Bathinda, denied that Verka was starting a price war. “We already had this project in mind and it may be just a coincidence that it has come at this time. Shortly, we will also introduce a packing of 2.5 litre in both skimmed milk and 4.5 parts fat varieties. The 5-litre packing has been launched across the state at all dealer networks and milk plants. Unpacked milk will be available only at Verka milk plants”.

“Verka has no plans of hiking milk prices as of now. Private dairy owners had contended that they were hiking milk prices considering the rising cost of fodder, wheat and cattle,” the official informed. When one of the Verka dealers in the city was contacted, he said, “We have heard that the company is launching 5 litre pack, but till now, its not available in Bathinda.”

Bathinda, March 6
Alarming rise in the number of stray cattles in various localities of the city, especially in SAS Nagar, has not only been creating nuisance for the residents but it has also created panic among them. Two residents of SAS Nagar and Veer Colony were attacked by the stray cattle recently and they were admitted to hospital as they sustained serious injuries.

Ashwini Malhi, a resident of Veer Colony, got injured when a stray ox attacked him from the back while he was going for a morning walk. A stray cow attacked Gaurav Sharma, a resident of SAS Nagar, a few days back. He sustained multiple fractures and was admitted in a private hospital for several days.

According to information, welfare associations of various areas approached the MC authorities to check the cattle menace a number of times. However, no action has been taken so far. There are around 200 stray cattle in Veer Nagar, SAS Nagar, Railway Colony and Partap Nagar.

These animals keep occupying corners of the streets throughout the day, leaving heaps of dung. What is particularly worrisome is that there is always a risk of collision of vehicles with these animals.

One of the elderly people of Veer Colony said MC authorities have dishonoured the dignity of the elderly persons. The president of Veer Colony welfare association Partap Singh, has urged the MC authorities to launch a campaign to displace the stray cattle and other animals from the city.

It is worth mentioning here, that the government had recently opened a cowshed, but nobody was bothered about the oxens’ and buffalos roaming freely in the city. Despite repeated calls, none of the senior functionaries of the MC could be contacted for comments.

Masha’s cassette released

Bathinda, March 6
He is simple, like life is. And like life, he is there- living it out- his own way. “There’s just one life. You’ve got to do what you’ve got to do. I always dreamt of being a pop singer, and today I stand before you all, with pride, and a cassette of mine in my hands.” That’s Masha Ali, a dashing 23-year-old city lad, winner of last year’s ‘Awaaz Punjab Di’ competition.

His latest album has been launched by Mh1 Music Company and has been named ‘Awaaz Punjab Di-2 Masha Ali’ and consists of 8 songs.

Masha Ali Khan, popularly known as Masha Ali was born in 1985 in the family of small time folk singers in the dusty hamlet called Natt Banger, some 30 kilometer from Bathinda.

“It’s been like a dream come true for me. As we say, time changes everything, and so, it has rightly changed for me,” Masha tells with a glittering smile on his face.

During his college days, he used to perform as playback singer with bhangra teams to earn some extra bucks. “Now when I have started earning by doing live shows, I want that my father should not work and lead a comfortable life. He has worked all his life and now its my turn to do so”.

He seemed a bit sad due to the step motherly treatment of the state government towards him. “I have promoted punjabi culture at the national level. But during Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal’s birthday celebrations on December 8 last year, Ishmeet Singh, winner of Voice of India was awarded with Rs 5 lakh award. But me, being from the same city where the function was held, was not even invited.”

“I don’t say that Ishmeet is a bad singer nor do I say that he didn’t deserve to be honoured by the state government because he made Punjabi’s proud all across the country. But even I have beaten 40,000 odd contestants to win the Awaaz Punjab Di title. I belong to Bathinda and the government should have done something to encourage me on that occasion,” Masha alleged.
