Anti-incumbency to benefit SAD-BJP: Jaitely

Jalandhar, January 28
The BJP General Secretary and in-charge of the Punjab BJP affairs, Mr Arun Jaitely, talked much about the arithmetic of the Assembly elections instead of his party programmes and issues at his press conference here today.

Mr Jaitely claimed that the anti-incumbency factor against the Congress would benefit the SAD-BJP combine.

He said this elections were reversal of those in 2002. During the previous elections, the SAD-BJP was facing anti-incumbency to some extent, later SGPC chief G.S. Tohra had fielded his candidates and the Congress was in alliance with Left parties.

“On the contrary, now anti-incumbency is against the Congress and it is contesting elections on its own,” he said, adding this would benefit the SAD-BJP combine and it would form its government in Punjab.

Criticising the behaviour of the Chief Minister’s media adviser, Mr B.I.S. Chahal, against a journalist at a press conference in Ludhiana on January 26, he said this indicated that how autocratic Capt Amarinder Singh was. He did not only show disrespect to the opposition leaders but he was also inaccessible to his own party leaders.

Mr Jaitely hoped that most of 11 office-bearers of the Hoshiarpur unit of the BJP, who had resigned after the allocation of ticket to Mr Tikshan Sood, would start campaigning in favour of the party candidate from the next day.

He said former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani would tour Punjab for electioneering.

All the three candidates of the BJP from different seats of the city - Mr Manoranjan Kalia, Mr Chunni Lal Bhagat, Mr K.D. Bhandari - the BJP city chief, Mr S.D. Chugh, and the SAD city chief, Mr Charanjit Singh Channi, were present on the occasion.

Tension over house construction
Tribune News Service

Phagwara, January 28
The police was deployed in Bhullarai village following tension between two communities over the construction of house today.

The government allotted 80 plots to Dalits for constructing houses in the village in 1974. In 1994, when the Dalits started the construction, members of the other community “razed” their houses. The Dalits again started the construction this morning.

Some Ambedkar Sena activists threatened the administration that atrocities on Dalits would not be tolerated and the administration would be held responsible for any acts of violence between the communities.

However, the Phagwara SDM, Mr Balwinder Singh Dhaliwa, summoned members of both the communities on January 31 to sort the issue.

Three hospitalised

A group of nearly six youths allegedly attacked Jatinder Walia, Gurjinder Singh and Raja with swords. They were admitted to the Civil Hospital. The police has registered a case.
