Sulking SPOs wait for salary hike

Jalandhar, January 18
Special Police Officers (SPOs), who played an important role during the militancy in Punjab, are a disillusioned lot these days.

They are still waiting for the Chief Minister, Capt Amarinder Singh’s announcement, made at a function to mark the 47th Police Commemoration Day on October 21 in Patiala, that their salaries would be enhanced from Rs 90 to Rs 150 per day to materialise.

They said like other Chief Ministers, Capt Amarinder Singh had also forgotten to fulfil his promise. “Every Assembly election brings hope for us, but there is only disappointment in the end. This time we, nearly 2,500 SPOs, have decided to boycott the poll. Earlier, we waged a war against the militants, now we are fighting a different battle, the fight for our rights,” said an SPO here today on the condition of anonymity.

“The way our cases are being handled is an example of government apathy. We are paid only Rs 2,700 per month or Rs 90 a day, which is less than even the wages of a labourer who daily earns Rs 125-150. Moreover, we are now over-age and ineligible to get any government job,” rued another SPO.

The SPOs have been recruited in the late eighties and early nineties to fight militancy on daily-wage allowance in order to meet the shortage of police personnel. Even after the militancy, they continue to assist the force. However, some of the SPOs have been absorbed in the police as constables. Still, the fate of 2,500-odd SPOs hangs in balance.

“Even the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the apex court gave directions to the government that the rules should be relaxed in the recruitment of the SPOs in view of their long service in the force. However, the government rejected some of the SPOs on various accounts, including qualification, minimum height requirement and chest expansion ,” said the SPOs who are posted in Jalandhar district.

Bogus votes: sad blames Cong

Kapurthala, January 18
The SAD candidate from Kapurthala, Mr Raghubir Singh, has alleged that more than 600 bogus votes have been prepared at Mandi Janj Ghar at the behest of the Congress.

In a formal complaint to the SDM-cum-Returning Officer, Mr Raghubir Singh alleged that at least 500 of the 600 bogus votes were prepared of persons who were working in Jalandhar MP Rana Gurjit Singh’s mills located outside Kapurthala.

He alleged that these bogus votes were prepared for helping Rana’s sister-in-law Sukhjinder Kaur Rana, who is contesting from Kapurthala on the Congress ticket.

On the other hand, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr Raminder Singh, termed the allegations as baseless.

He said he himself visited booth numbers 48, 49 and 50 and found that no bogus vote had been prepared.

However, the SAD candidate demanded the shifting of the Deputy Commissioner and the SSP to ensure free and fair elections.

In a letter sent to the Chief Election Commissioner, he alleged that civil and police administrative heads were following the MP’s directions.

He also demanded that one representative of the SAD should be allowed to be present at the time of distribution of newly prepared voter cards.
