CRPF to raise 10 more battalions

Jalandhar, January 11
The Centre has given the green light to the CRPF to raise more battalions in order to carry out anti-insurgency operations in the country.

Talking to The Tribune at the CRPF complex here today, the Director-General, CRPF, Mr J.K. Dutt, said: “The force is raising 10 new battalions, 6,000 jawans will be recruited for these battalions to meet the growing challenge from the militants. With the new battalions, the force will achieve the distinction of being the strongest paramilitary force in the country.”

Mr Dutt was given the additional charge of the paramilitary force last month. He is also the Director-General of the National Security Guard.

He was in Jalandhar to participate in the reunion of the 1971 batch of the Direct Appointed Gazetted Officers.

The Director-General said after the violence in Assam more battalions had been dispatched there. Assam has 24 battalions deployed currently, while 36 battalions are stationed in Jammu and Kashmir.

Regarding the deployment of additional battalions in Punjab during the Vidhan Sabha elections, he said it was too early to comment.

“It is the state government to decide the exact number of battalions it requires. We will provide them as per the requirement,” he said.

“The Centre is modernising the force in terms of upgradation of arms, communication systems, mobility and transport. We have provided INSAS (Indian National Small Arms System) rifles to the jawans. These are modern firearms assault rifles.”

When asked about the rise of stress levels among jawans, especially due to long duration of separation from the family, he said: “The CRPF has set up counselling centres to destress the jawans, especially those posted in the militancy-hit areas.”

A number of measures had been undertaken to cut stress levels and improve man management in the units. The Commandants of the units had been told to interact with the jawans regularly to understand their emotions and to interview soldiers who return from leave to assess their stress levels, he said.

“This will, of course, help the officers know the behaviour of the jawans. The introduction of yoga, counselling by professionals and increased focus on welfare activities are being adopted to prevent unfortunate incidents like suicides and fratricides,” Mr Dutt added.

Woes of ETT teachers
Parmod Bharti

Nawanshahr, January 11
The woes of the selected ETT teachers, desperately waiting for the issuance of appointment letters, continued unabated. As many as 213 selected teachers, who were selected by the Zila Parishad on December 28, could not get the appointment letters as the model code of conduct came into force on December 29.

The affected teachers submitted the memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner here on January 2 for further submission to the Chief Electoral Officer, Punjab, for directing the authorities concerned for the issuance of appointment letters to them.

The Chief Electoral Officer, in a letter issued to all District Electoral Officers, has said the matter of recruitment of ETT teachers was referred to the Election Commission for advice. While the Election Commission has clarified that the candidates who have been issued appointment letters before December 29 should be allowed to join duty, it has sought details regarding the number of selected candidates who are not issued appointment letters.

Meanwhile, a deputation of the teachers today met the Deputy Chief Electoral Officer in Chandigarh and apprised him that the selection list along with the allotted stations of their postings was displayed by the Zila Parishad on December 28 and only the process of serving them appointment letters could not be completed due to the election code.

The Deputy Chief Electoral Officer advised them to request the Deputy Commissioner to submit the factual position regarding the process of recruitment so that the information may be furnished to the Election Commission.
